I haven't done much to modify my guns (a little trigger work here and there), but I've wanted to mount a scope on my 870 express for a while, and didn't want to get the 'saddle' type rail that uses the trigger-group pin holes. I had a weaver-style Leupold mount designed for a Rem 700, so I used it as a template, and drilled & tapped a couple holes in the top of the 870. Although I used a micrometer to try to get the mount as straight as possible, when I mounted the scope, the dot was slightly left (using the bead on the barrel as a guide)...I'd guesstimate 8-10 MOA. This cheap BSA scope has a very broad range of windage adjustment, so I was able to compensate.
It's just an 870, so I really don't care if I reduced it's value. I just wanted to try to make it a more accurate turkey gun. If I want to remove it, I could just throw a couple of set screws with some threadlocker in there to fill the holes.
I'm going to try to sight it in with slugs @ 50 yards, and then see what a pattern of #5 shot @ 40 yards w/ a turkey choke looks like. I know - I should have done this before turkey season started.
