    Truing a 700

For some reason, I went down a rabbit hole tonight on milling ports in shotgun barrels and truing 700 actions

Blueprinting, or truing a rifle action ensures the receiver face, threads, lugs, bolt lugs and bolt face are square to the center line of the receiver. In this article, we will start with a new Rem…

Here is one of the stories I read.. figured I would share
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

    Porting shotguns with a jig

Porting a shotgun helps decrease muzzle rise and felt recoil.  I decided to port the 18.5″ barrel on my 870 Remington shotgun.  This is a quick and easy project that requires minimum tooling.…

Those piloted taps suck at actually getting everything in line because the mandrels don't actually fit the reciever tight enough to try to make the tap cut the threads to center.

The only way to REALLY get everything straight is to single point machine the threads, lug seats and reciever face all in one setup.

Also, they don't do anything in that article to tighten up the fit between the reciever and bolt so they are not really doing anything about how loose the factory bolt fits.

Why even bother trying to get everything within 0.001" of straight when you have 0.008" of slop between the bolt and reciever?

The work they do really does not effect accuracy/precision.
That type of work is primarily done to make people feel better about what they have.
I don't think there is a customer out there who could even measure how true the parts are after a truing job because anyone who could make those measurements would be doing their own truing work.

Ever notice that there are no tools or fixtures made/sold to check reciever concentricity and squareness?
      Ever wonder why that is?
