Dethreading a threaded barrel

I bought a zev slide that came with a KKM threaded barrel and would like to use the barrel if I can dethread it safely. I was thinking that I have two options.

Option 1: Simply file the threads off leaving the extra barrel length protruding.

Option 2: Chop the threads off and square off in a drill press vertically.

I'm not experienced with barrels at all, so I am ignorant on the topic but can I get away with a relatively square cut on this pistol barrel with option 2? The plan would be to dremel close to the crown, and finish off with a flat bottom drill in a drill press or a file. If it works, why not, if not I guess I could buy a new barrel.

Or buy a new non threaded barrel to use and keep this one for when you are not in CA. Or sell this one.

or you could install a thread protector over the threads and permanently attach it.

If you have good skills, a barrel can be cut off, filed square, re-crowned, and chamfered by hand. The end result will be as good as your own handy work. A lathe makes it a very easy job.

I ended up filing the threads off and am planning to cut it down leaving a few mm protruding with just a file and chamfering to test with. If it's not terrible shooting I'll reduce it down to flush with the slide. If it is, I'll buy some tooling.

The barrel's not worth enough to make it worth it to send out for work and send back. I also don't think anyone in the bay area needs a threaded barrel (i dont sell on ebay/gunbroker/armslist because of the high # of scammers). I'm treating it as an extra where if it works, I'd be happy to use it, if not I am happy to toss it in the trash. I wasn't able to find a thread protector thin enough to clear the OEM slide, the zev has even less tolerance.

MV I actually searched the link after remembering your reverse crown video from one of the videos using brownell's barrel-indexed tool. I don't leave the state enough to where it would make sense to have a threaded pistol barrel on a glock.

I charge $30 to either OD grind the threads off or shorten and re-crown most pistol barrels.

I may take you up on that at some point, but currently its compliant and it will perform. It's ugly as sin, but doesn't affect function. The only concern I have now is the amount of attention at the range it might draw if people assume a protruding barrel is a threaded barrel.

People should mind their own business.
If someone questions you, hide the barrel from them immediately and tell them it’s not threaded.
Hopefully, they think you lying.
If they want proof, tell them you will bet them $20/$50/$100 (as you please) that it’s not threaded.
If they want to pay up, they can check it for themselves...
