Shotgun Barrel Threading in East Bay?

    Hello folks,

Can any one recommend a shotgun smith in the East Bay/Vallejo/Napa area who can thread a Remington 870 18.5 inch barrel?

I want to be able to install a screw-in Carlson Tactical Extended choke into my stock 18.5 inch home defense barrel. As much as possible, I don't want to ship out my barrel for this service but prefer to keep it local.

    Thanks.

The muzzle on modern screw chokes barrels are flared a bit to accommodate the choke tube and threads. So, you probably can not simply thread the barrel you already have. You can install a Colonial Arms choke tube adapter, those slip over and are soldered in place. The easiest and cheapest way is to simply buy the barrel you want. IF money is that tight EBAY the old barrel to defer costs.

Be warned, anything with ports will make the shotgun painfully loud. Particularly a shorter barrel. Particularly when standing to the side. Your screw in ported tactical device will do nothing of value, performance wise, and will only annoy the other shooters and make you deaf.

Many old school fuddy-duddies, like me, hate ports and comps. That comes from experience. I do not own one, or shoot with anybody who has one on his gun. I am already 80% deaf it sucks to not be able to follow conversions. It sucks for my ears to ring 24-7. I would never encourage someone to damage their hearing. Comps and ports will do that.

Thanks a lot, " Scota4570 ". I trully appreciate a constructive advise, borne by experience. You saved me money and aggravation.

I am quite new to shotguns and as a consequence thereof, sometimes get swayed by advertising.

I am taking your advise to heart.

Tru-choke makes a thinwall choke tube and tooling that solves the problem of putting choke tubes in a barrel that is not extra thick to make room for standard sized threads.
I have done many thinwall choke installation jobs.

You are correct though about the least expensive option for an 870 is simple replacing the barrel.
On many other shotguns where there are no inexpensive replacement barrels available, modifying the existing barrel would be the only option.

These things are great. You can use common tubes you already have so, you can use steel shot. Select the size that will require the least turning down of the muzzle. I do this with a four jaw and a tail-stock live center. I like to solder them. I guess you could use a fancy Loctite. They look sleek and require no special reamers or taps. It is a quick easy way to salvage a shortened or damaged barrel. They work well to replace a poly choke or Cutts. I just replaced a cutts on a vent rib M-12. It would look better if the rib extended over the adapter, but for $25 the solution is acceptable.

Also a neat way to turn those 18.5" barrels into 20.5" barrels that let you run a 1 round longer magazine tube and be flush with the muzzle.

I don't know that I would trust Loctite 620 or the like to hold them in place.
Solder is definitely the right way to do it.
