    223 barrel

    Hi,

newbie to ar style guns. I have a 223 barreled ar and was wondering if I bore out the chamber to 5.56 nato dimensions, would the gun be safe to shoot using nato ammo...? don't really know if metallurgy is the same for the two differing sized barrels.

I'm pretty sure the barrels are not the issue, it's the chamber that needs to be rated for 5.56.

Its all about the chamber pressures from what ive read. 5.56 nato and .223 have the same shell dimensions. http://www.ar15armory.com/forums/556...ns-t22582.html

yeah, you can't really bore out a chamber, unless you don't want the cartridge to fit, but you could buy a new upper.

As long as the barrel is not chrome lined, the chamber can be reamed out to 223 Wylde or even all the way to 5.56.
If the barrel is chromed, you would need a carbide reamer to cut the chrome and you won't have a chromed chamber when you are done.

I have re-chambered lots of 223 barrels to 223 Wylde.
That's the best chamber because it will shoot 223 or 5.56 without the loss in accuracy you get with a 5.56 chamber.

And there you have it Randell speak and he knows from what I have heard...

Ok Randall here is one for you....

The Ruger Engineer told me the Mini 14 (the old 1 I have so not sure on new ones) are chambered in 5.56 but have been marked .223 to be more civilian friendly.... And even the Ruger Mini 14 manual it say's 5.56 is ok sooo?....

So then why do people always say in the Mini 14 it is "dangerous" to shoot 5.56 when Ruger does it and say's it ok themselves...

OK go.... Thanks for your time in this matter.

I don't think those people ever read the manual.

So your saying Ruger is right and all the people who say it's bad are wrong? That is the way I see it too btw...

Some of the responses in this thread make me wonder if the folks spewing out speculative answers have ever been shooting before.
