    AK build

I am going to try my first AK build. Is there any one in the northbay with AKbuilder tools I can rent, borrow or buy? Right now I need a barrel pin remover tool.

    Thanks!

All you need is a 20 ton press to remove that pin.

Try attending one of the Marin AK build parties.

I have a 12 ton press but would like the fixture that supports the trunion. Anyone have a easier way? Online I saw some instructions to clamp it in a vise and drive it out with a punch and sledge hammer. Seems sketchy to me. Anybody ever do it that way?

        You're overthinking everything.
You don't need a "fixture". Just take a few plates of steel. use a large one for your base, and drill a hole for the pin to fall through. use the other smaller plates as spacers for the front trunion.

Like Aaron said, you don't need the specific tool. All you need is a press and a broken drill bit or something else to drive it out.

If you want to drive it out "bubba" style, contact thedrickel. I think he's done it that way before.

I think I put all 12 tons on this thing and it won't budge. I am having a hard time keeping everything lined up in the press too. The pin is starting to get boogered. Maybe I got a difficult one.

You should come to a Marin build party. Whatever you do, don't drill the pin!

Don't drill the pin, it's hard to NOT drill the barrel also, so why risk it.

I've demilled a few simply supporting it with a couple blocks of wood and went to town on the pin with a 4lb sledge hammer and a huge punch held by vice grips. Soaked the darn pin in Kroll for about two days first though.

I've also has a pin that won't budge even with a 12 ton press.
I've seen first hand our resident AK expert Drickle do the patented brute force vice method.
                Works like a charm.
I'll let him elaborate if he cares to.

This is if you have access to a press.

All you need is a 1/4" drill shank, that is your barrel pin removal tool. Cut the shank at 1/4" length, it must be a square cut. Cut another about 3/4" and another a tad over an inch. Use the shortest piece to start the pin then longer as you push it out. Your pushing down toward the numbered side of the trunnion, numbers on supporting plate of course. Soak in Kroil a couple of days before you push. If it's a Romanian, the later kits starting around year 1981/1982, were built by people who were not the best experienced gunsmiths. Some pins are galled to hell when initially installed, in addition to being rusted.
