    Home Engraving

I have a lot of homebuilds that need engraving.

Is there anything that I could buy that could do the appropriate engraving depths at home?

$50 to $60 a gun would add up quickly. If I can find something affordable and within 1 to 2k, it would be worth the investment.

    Anyone have some reccomendations?

You can do what I did and buy an engraver and learn how to use it and source 40 year old parts.

I lucked out with someone close to me selling an used Marking Methods 300 for cheap with pretty much all new accessories. I just had to buy some more etching solutions, and my own stencils, then off I go marking my own at home. Each etch is no more than 5 minutes, and they're nice and deep. I design my stencils according to the compliant font size.

This is what most trophy and engraving shops charge for a one off, Yeah if multiple parts were being done i could see a bulk discount but $20 a lower, Not worth my time to try and compete with that.

Even at 20$ a mark, I would be well into the 1k range. I would just prefer to find equipment that would work and spend the 1k on that.

I thought of electro etching but I think I want to find something mechanical that can get finer letters.

Look around for a used cnc engraving set up. The cheaper new ones are about 3 grand and then you still need the software and the computer for the software. Etching will be by far the cheapest but hard to get sharp looking small letters like you said. Any laser set up is the cost of a new car

someone did a detailed thread on electro etching.

I found a used vision VE 810 with a deep self centering clamp and software for 1000$. I may pick it up and try to teach myself how to use it.

This works great for me. Had to get a stencil cutting machine. In the long run cheaper than 40 bucks per unit.

I realize electro etching is a easy cost efficient process. However I'm looking for something that will produce sharp small lettering that is repeatable and fast to reset. After I'm done with the engraving I can resell the engraver and get some of my money back.

It's a lot of money up front, but if I can get a serviceable used engraving machine that will do my needs. I will cost me less when all is said and done. We are not simply talking about 1 or 2 units KCScott knows me and knows how long I have been building.

Thanks to CA oppressive gun laws I have to spend this extra time and money just to be compliant, when it was perfectly legal a year ago or in any other state in the union. Unfortunately I cannot move from this oppressive state.

Talk to Mrlonewolf and see if he can help, since he already has the equipment, and I thought he was working with kcstott on a possible meet-up down in SD.

Nope, I offered a potential location. I don’t have the time to organize anything. Nor do I care to deal with a bunch of half measures that say they are interested then when it comes time to follow through no one bothers to show up.

Just look up group buys, build parties, and PSL Barrels.
