    Need help appraising

    Hello all.

Looking for some help. I have a S&W model 29 44 mag 8 3/8 barrel (blued) in great condition. Just the barrel, not the whole revolver

How much do they sell for used? Trying to gauge a fair price for it.

    Thank you..... Mike

They did not make a 7.5"

    That's a 8 3/8"

Thank you for correcting me. I measured it from the tip to the beggining of threads.

$50 to $75 seems about right.
That barrel will not just screw into another frame and clock up correctly or have the right endspace without some gunsmithing so the whole project of swapping a barrel is usually not very appealing due to the gunsmithing costs involved.
This tends to deflate the value of used revolver barrels.

Most people would just sell one gun and buy another with the new barrel length they want before they would spend 2/3 the cost of the whole gun to fit a different barrel.

Aren't 29 barrels pinned in place? If so he would only need to gap the cylinder?

Early smiths have the barrel pinned in place, but the barrel still gets timed by cutting back the shoulder so that the top of the barrel aligns with the top of the frame when it tightens against the frame.
The pin is just there to make sure the barrel can not unscrew because the older guns were apparently not set as tightly as the non-pinned guns.

The non-pinned barrels go in at 20-25 ft-lbs (really fine threads!) so they are not likely to unscrew even without the pin.
The new guns with one piece barrels don't get the barrels pinned in place anymore.

You can install an old barrel the same way as a new gun is built.

Once the barrel is set back to get the alignment right, there may will not be enough room for the cylinder so the back of the barrel is trimmed to create the cylinder clearance(gap).
Once you shorten the back of the barrel, you then may also need to re-cut the forcing cone if much of the barrel needed to be faced off to get the timing right.

I want to know where you buy a tape measure that requires you to use safety glasses.
