    Welding Colt A1 Upper?

Can a small crack be safely repaired by welding on an old colt a1 upper?

Not really, 7075 is considered unweldable due to the potential for cracks to develop after the weld has cooled.

It could be welded up, IF the weld is in an unstressed area. But if it's unstressed, where did the crack come from?

I'd seen a couple online for sale and wondered if it was worth it.

I would avoid that upper. That crack could be repaired but you would need to make sure the tolerances are correct. Especially since you have several areas that need to be a specific size (bcg area, buffer tube area, barrel area, front/rear pin). Heating up the area needed to be welded may cause other issues with the form and fit.

Thousands of Colt M16 receivers have been rewelded.

Easy to weld, no issue at all. However given the value vs the cost to have done, probably not worth it.

I used to do a land office building welding up broken "ears" for the trigger guard when people would screw up on assembly.

Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should.

                I don't trust welded 7075

                  It's not worth it.
That crack is from improperly supporting the receiver while removing a tight barrel nut.
The bigger concern is if the receiver bore also opened up while the receiver was being twisted enough to crack like that.
If it did, re-welding the crack is not going to fix the rest of the stretch damage.

If it is cheap enough, and you do not expect it to really work, but you like tinkering, try it. I would use that miracle brazing rod from the gun show.
