Can I spray paint a lower?

I have a raw aluminum AR15 lower. Its not going to be any kind of show gun. I was just thinking of getting some regular spray paint to finish the lower. Has anyone done this? Anything I need to know?

If your lower is made out of wood, i probably wouldn't spray paint it first. Put some primer on it first.

Run it through dishwasher to degrease and use high heat. I am doing a pistol lower tomorrow.

Sure, you can bedazzle it too if you want. Just because you can doesn't mean you should though.

I could have used search but I figured I would start a new thread so all people could post up your smart *** answers.

High temperature engine enamel works fine. You can get it at walmart, auto zone, home depot...

Don't get the one for 2000 degrees. Get the 500. It works better and looks better.

Yes, people spray ARs & AKs all the time. Engine paint or bbq paint. Surface prep is important, and even so it won't be as durable as anodizing. But it's easy to respray.

Keep in mind though that some gun cleaners will strip off the paint if you accidentally get some on the receiver. I can't remember which ones off hand but try a bit in a small area first.

Rustoleum appliance epoxy, then bake it for an hour at 300 degrees. Turns out pretty tough, and stands up to most solvents

Cannot understand why some people want to "gunk up" their AR lowers with spray paint. I contacted a local shop and had mine professionally anodized in black for $20.00 a pop. Look around......anodizing is NOT that expensive.
