Idea I had for easy polymer 80% builds with a dremel - "pocket negative"

I was contemplating another 80% AR-15/308 after completing an EP Armory lower, from back when they had the white inserts. This made it easy to complete with a dremel, you knew exactly how much material to remove. Now that that isn't legal anymore, I was trying to come up with a way to make it easy to dremel a polymer lower.

My idea is to create a "negative" of the trigger group pocket - a block of plastic or whatever material that is a perfect fit to the pocket. Then, you'd just start removing material with a dremel, inserting the negative as you go to ensure you're removing just enough material. When it fits flush into the lower you're done, drill your pin and safety holes and assemble.

Does this already exist? Didn't really know what to google.

If it doesn't, you heard it here first. I want to prototype it and try it, if it works I might start manufacturing these. I don't have a lower with a good pocket (like I said I did mine with a dremel) but if anyone knows how I can get a good negative (like molding one from an existing lower) I would be interested.

    What do you think?

You're talking about a mold/negative void. This company has a mold with inserts. You pour a liquid polymer into the mold, allow it to set, then remove the mold. Your method is to test fit if you've actually milled the pocket to spec.

ar-15, ar15, 100 percent lower, 80 percent lower, ar15 lower, gun mold, ar15 mold, white plastic is freedom

Thank you! $40 for a fire control group pocket mold block... Very near buying it and a couple polymer 80%s and testing my method.

Couldn't you just use any lower as a mold?

Yeah, problem is like I said in the OP I don't have a good one, just the one I dremeled which is gnarly.

OP watch some YouTube on making and pouring molds and castings to make props. That should help you on your way. You could possibly make some in aluminum.

Hell, I'll make one for you out of aluminum for $40 + shipping. Seriously.

You would have to tell me what shape you want. There are many different pocket shapes.

The only positive thing I can say about the genisis80 lower is it comes with that "negative" pocket. You could order a 80% from them and throw away the lower

Really? That's awesome. It says you live in San Jose and I live in SF so that'd be real cheap, I could pick it up from you even.

Didn't know that about pockets, I assumed they were more or less universal. I guess I'd just want the most common one. I don't suppose that would work for both AR-15s and AR-10s?
