    Another 1911 build

    1911 Builders
No commercial jigs, just home made jigs.

    Drilled sear and hammer holes

    Removed some from the top
    20170224_211548.jpg

Removed about .0035 from both sides. This would leave it ~.001 larger than the inside of the slide.

    About to cut slide rail

Aaaaaaand this happens the first time I take it out.
Happened after about 1-2 rounds out of a full mag (already shot maybe 30). A case must have smacked it just right.

Wow, that is unbelievably sad. Can you send it back to VV for replacement?

Agreed! Well done with the build. I've fortunately never had a reason to use it, but I hear Vortex has about the best warranty out there. Not sure if really crappy luck is covered, but can't hurt to contact them...? Good luck

Yeah. They have a lifetime warranty. Doesnt matter how it broke, they will repair/replace it for free.

Thanks. I was thinking about buying another one since amazon will deliver same day. I was told by peers that I should have gone with the RMR... but damn, I have a hard time clicking that Add to Cart for a nearly $600 little red dot.

When I called they said they would repair/replace it under warranty regardless of how it broke, and regardless if Im the original owner (which I am)... Ill post a timeline on the experience once I get it back.

Ok, now I don't feel bad for you and can say that I think you did a hell of a job. But I would take a look at the ejection trajectory before putting a new red dot on.

Just kidding. I still feel bad for you. Are you DONE done, or is there more coming up while you are waiting for a new sight?

I dont know what Im going to do with the finish yet. I was hoping to shoot it a bunch, get bored, then naturally move on to the next improvement. I know once I try to blend the safety, Im going to do the rest so match the finish. I dont have an artistic eye, so I dont have any inspiration yet.

                      Im open for suggestions.

That's what I've heard from multiple people, which is one reason why my SCAR currently has a Vortex optic and I'm shopping for a couple red dots for my PS90 and FS2000...good quality, good prices, good selection, and great warranty=tough to beat. I look forward to hearing how it shakes out.

Just for comfort I would highly recommend aN undercut for the trigger guard. It does make a difference in the feel by allowing your middle finger to get on the same plane as the other fingers and it does help get a little higher of a grip.

That is my oNE and only "functional" suggestion. Everything else is in the eye of the beholder.

Thats actually a good point. I was thinking about bringing someone along to take a video of it. I have 2 1911 builders, same frame, slide, kit, etc. The first one has truglo sights. I reload my ammo, and these guns have only been fed reloads. When shooting my first 1911, I can only retrieve about 20% of my brass. The rest shoot over to the right, and some go slightly forward.

When shooting this new one, I retrieved just about all my brass because it was behind me. I dont know how much of it bounced off the wall, but there's definitely a difference between the two in regards to the brass trajectory.

Here is what one of mine did

The case was bouncing off the rear edge of the ejection port and going sideways and sometimes forward. Look at Extractor tension, ejector length/shape, ejection port to extractor relationship and finally recoil spring/hammer spring power.

Launching straight back... I would check extractor tension also.
