A friend and I bought some torch cut Galil receivers and we are going to reweld them. Can anyone send me some pics of their completed receiver? Interested in left, right, top and bottom. Thank you.

If your just looking for pictures... Go to google and search 'galil receiver images' and boom you'll get all the pictures you need..
Personally I'd rather work off a good set of prints though...But I don't come 'round here to meet nice people anyway

Just curious have you done a lot of rewelds? Where'd you get the receiver pieces? Where are the cuts? Thru the trunnion? But I don't come 'round here to meet nice people anyway

Rewelds are fun.. It can be challenging on the thinner receivers like AKs though. Do You have a jig or any plans on making one? Hopefully you have some of the earlier cut receivers That weren't cut thru the trunnion... And hopefully you have some overlaps in your pieces, And you won't have to fill large gaps.
I might be interested in the extra torch cut receivers depending on where the cuts are and if there's overlap.
There's some prints on weaponsguild.. 4th reply down

depending upon the year of manufacture, most Galil's that i've seen had thicker milled receivers as compared to the standard akComment

That's good to know, I've never done a galil, can't imagine it being much thicker than a M70 or M60 though... If I can warp a Suomi or a DPM or a gory or a etc... I can turn that galil into a banana. Rewelds are a balance of good penetration vs overheating. A solid setup, a good welding jig, a good backer, and using shims to offset shrinkage are key, small welds in small alternating sections work better than solid beads. Pre heating and stress relieving also help.
OP what kind of welder you guys plan on using?Last edited by kalibeltfeeder; 02-23-2017, 7:14 AM.But I don't come 'round here to meet nice people anyway

TIG cleaner, MIG fills gaps better,
I've seen professional welders warp the s*** out of rewelds... Sometimes helps to have a machinist friend to help mill out all the welds too
I'm sure you guys will have no problems though. It's a fun process. Good luck! And Keep us posted too.Last edited by kalibeltfeeder; 02-23-2017, 11:37 AM.But I don't come 'round here to meet nice people anyway

KC is a great resource this site and for people that are polite enough to ask nicely.

The biggest critique will come from you getting it to run... Getting the bolt to ride smoothly into lock-up, getting the the top cover to fit, getting mags to fit the magwell and getting rounds to feed , etc... It can look pretty but if the bolt doesn't move correctly than what's the point?
Aesthetically your first reweld will not be flawless, especially the internals. It's easy to weld the outsides and grind them smooth, but getting the welds to completely close the seam on the inside is a chore... Metal likes to move and bend and warp once you start heating it up. Especially the thinner receivers.
I'll say it again, a good solid setup is crucial. I usually spend way more time on making my welding jigs than the actual welding. And even more time cleaning up the welds. Clamp everything down, use backers, use shims. Go slow and make small tacks, moving around the receiver, then stop, take it off your jig, check the bolt travel, the cover fit, the magazine fit, etc... Make adjustments where needed, than repeat. Invest in an assortment of carbide burrs and files.
Still would like to know what kind of cuts your working with.. Horizontal cuts thru the trunnion? Cut behind the trunnion and before the locking lugs? 2 cuts? 3 cuts? Do you have overlapping sections?
I've never done a galil, but I've done plenty of rewelds, I'm only an hour away and I work in Stockton often (actually was working in Tracy today) if you need a 3rd opinion or you want to see and shoot some re-welds hit me up. Although you'll see what you need to do to make it work..But I don't come 'round here to meet nice people anyway
