    XDm Sight Removal

I recently purchase a Vortex Venom and plate adapter to put on my XDm-9 4.5" barrel.

To install this I need to remove the rear sight.

Does anyone in the Irvine area have a sight removal tool, that will work on XDm sights?

I have heard these sights are notoriously difficult to remove. I have a place where I can send my slide, but I am not too keen on having my pistol gone for that long.

Any advice or help is appreciated.

Push them out with a hydraulic press, or cut them out with a milling machine.

I don't happen to have a hydraulic press or milling machine.

Has anyone ever removed sights from an XD or XDm with a Sight Pusher? If so, anyone near Irvine who I can pay to use it?

Xdm sights are one of the worst sights to take out. Good luck.

They are in so tight that it is likely to damage the slide when a sight pusher is used. Unless you have a dedicated fixture that will hold the slide very securely for a press, a mill is the best option. The new sight can be fitted so it can be installed with a pusher and not muck up the slide, but really all you need for install is a punch. As with any of this type work, the devil is in the details. Skill, knowledge, and a bit of experience are required to get it done and have a good gun left over.
If you are willing to pay to use a pusher, skip that and pay to have the sight cut out.

I've used this guy for two XDs. Great service and I got the sights back in one piece, no scratches or damage to the slide at all. http://shop.xdman.com/

For all those that sent me a PM, thank you . . . and apologies for not responding, I had some personal issues with my son, over the past couple of weeks..

Since I had all the components and figured, "Hey if I screw it up, I was going to send it to a gunsmith anyway.", I decided to give it a try with a small hammer and a punch. I used a c-clamp, soft piece of pine and techmat, on my workbench, to nest my slide between, aligning the rear sight with a downward swing. First whack and nothing . . . second whack and the sight began to move . . . about 10 more medium swings and the sight fell off.
Checked my slide and sight, and no damage whatsoever, barely a mark on the sight too.

With my slide still in place, I used a small piece of pine to tap my Venom adapter into place. Measured its position and gave a very light tap to have the adapter centered on my slide (Adapter plate fits in place of rear sight, then has set screws to adjust up & down cant, and (2) more set screws to lock into place ... all with blue lock tight.

Took it shooting and it's the best thing I could have done to my pistol, especially with my aging eyes.

                  Finished product:
