    Who's rear sight?

If you have Scatter Gun Technology type sight I wouldn't attempt this unless you are very familiar on how they are installed.

Scattergun Tech used to sell a jig through Brownells that makes this process relatively painless (but NOT idiot-proof). I have used one to install 5 or 6 sets. It indexes off the trigger guard pins.

I just did a ghost ring sight install on a Benelli receiver last night.
I can certainly do the scattergun sight on an 870 as well.

My personal 870 has the PSI ghost ring sight that I installed on the receiver.

You need a drill press and measure it correctly.

A milling machine does a much more accurate job.

I wouldn't trust a drill press for this job. A mill with a DRO and an edge finder to get the exact center of the action is going to be the ticket.
