    Unmarked Upper

I purchased an upper and it doesn't have the markings of what it is made for. It was sold to me as a .223 but I was wondering what the measurement would be with calipers on the inside diameter of the barrel to verify before I shoot anything through it.

I might be hard to measure with calipers since the only difference is chamber pressure really. Here is a link that might give you an idea on what to look for.

It has a quad rail I can see through but I don't see anything. I took the gas block off to see if it might be there but I don't see it. I'll take the hand guard off all the way to see if it's hidden somewhere way up near the feed ramps.

All of mine are marked between the gas block and barrel extension.

That's been my experience as well, barrel marking locations. But this one isn't there.

Were you able to pull off the handguard?

the only way to verify 223, 556, wilde is to guage the chamber or find the markings. If you are concerned to se if it is one of those or another caliber take a 223 round and put the projectile into the end of the barrel. If it falls all the way in then it is not a .224 barrel.

Well that is what started my concern. If I attempt to stick a .223 in the end of the barrel, it will not fit. The barrel is too small

It should not go all the way in. The rifling will block the bullet from going all the way in. The .224 size is the largest part of the barrel, the bullet pushes into the rifling and that is what seals the barrel and creates your forward momentum. With old war rifles that was the quick test to see if a barrel was shot out.

You have a 223 variant rifle.

as mentioned the barrel will be slightly smaller in diameter then the bullet.

Now take your self over to the Local gun shop and buy some .223 Rem or 5.56 dummy rounds and give those a try. if you can lock the bolt with one of those dummy rounds in the chamber you are good to go. So long as the dummy round don't rattle around in there. If it does you were sold a NSW edition in .223 Navy Seal. You can only get ammo from the Anphib base on Coronado Island and it will only operate with mags of at least 30 rounds or higher capacity. Basically meaning you were sold something you can not buy ammo for

And if you don't get the joke, Just sell the upper.
