    Saiga Sporter 5.45 Conversion Build

So I picked a Saiga 5.45 to be a twin to the 7.62 that I got from a calgunner a few years back.

A brief overview on the Saiga for those not familiar with them. The Sporter has a rifle stock, handguard and non threaded barrel. It was the real only way to get a Russian AK variant in the USA, but it an AK at heart with the same receiver, barrel etc. All that needs to be done is drill out and remove the old Trigger Group and trigger guard and replace with an AK FCG and guard. For the front side you just replace with an AK handguard and thread the barrel or replace the FSB.

For the front I ended up running a rail setup with a bolt on handguard retainer to keep it easy. It's cerakoted stone gray.

The stock side is a little tricky. Basically remove the dist cover, bolt etc. Remove the stock, drill out the Saiga trigger rivets/pinch the pins. Do the same abs remove the Saiga trigger guard, exposing the AK47 trigger area. Then bolt in the new trigger guard and AK Trigger Group. Reassemble and attach AK goodies.

Shortly after removing the Saiga trigger group. You'll see the two holes in the rear where the pins were.

Here you'll see the cut out in the receiver where the AK47 trigger sits but it's covered by the Saiga plate/trigger guard.

After removing the trigger guard/bottom plate the area underneath (outside the receiver) is bare metal. I simply cleaned it, tape off the area with painters tape and finished with high temp engine enamel. Then let it dry and cure with a heat gun. PS, receiver will be hot so don't touch it 😂😂😂

Presto, the rifle reassembled. Overall not too hard since I have a ton of tools, dremel, rotary grinders, punches and files etc. Typically you also want to install a bullet guide. I ended up not doing so since the tapco mags I have feed just fine. Tapcos almost mimic the Saiga mags exactly on the loading end. You probably can't get away with this on a 7.62

If you want to convert your Saiga, there are lots of you tube videos explaining it. Convert your Saiga to what it's meant to be. A Kalashnikov!

Great. Now go down to your local Lowes and get some Hillman plastic 3/16 hole plugs to plug the four holes in the side of your receiver. They look just like rivets.

    Works like a charm.

Also get a Bulgarian FSB and replace the SAIGA one. This will allow you to use a AK-74 type muzzle device!!

Just don't try to push 3/16" plugs into the old 4mm holes...
You can sometimes do it, but they don't look quite as nice as if you drill the holes to 3/16" first so the plugs fit correctly.

Picked some up today! Good to know that I'll need to drill the holes out. I'll be coming to you one day to thread this barrel.

Don't thread the barrel. Push off that terrible looking front sight base, and install a base which will accept the proper AK-74 break... The cost will be about the same!!!

The threads aren't 14x1L though. Rather not run an adapter

If you use a Bulgarian FSB it has the proper 24mm threads so you can use a real AK-74 muzzle device... No adapter needed.

It looks like the one in the below link...
