Hey everyone,
I know converted subguns are a finicky chore, especially the ill fated SR41. It's the hammer fired variant.
Issues I've fixed:
-bent firing pin and collapsed firing pin spring
-minimal trigger reset, now has a safe amount
Cosmetic changes:
-attached front sight hood and front sling loop
Problems:
-Patterns like a shotgun. 12" groups at 25 yards if that. The chrome lined barrel is in excellent condition, nice and shiny with prominent rifling from the chamber forward. I haven't slugged it. This is with PPU and Red Army Standard. I don't have any surplus, nor do I intend on buying any with prices the way they are.
-welded barrel extension is crooked, not in line with bore. Still plenty of clearance for the projectile.
-rear takedown latch is welded to the receiver, necessitating removal of the hinge pin for disassembly.
-after modifying the trigger, function is dramatically better. But it still (once every 200 rounds or so) will double.
Plan:
I won an MGS 16.25" 7.62x25 barrel for it, fully rifled. I plan on removing the tack welded extension and the original barrel and replacing it with this. I'm hoping that fixes the accuracy issue along with the off center extension. I am concerned about the added pressure created by the extra 6" of rifling with direct blowback, any input?
MGS is looking for a cut rear receiver section complete with the takedown latch and spring. If they find me one, I'll cut the welded part off of mine and graft this rear section on restoring takedown functionality.
If trigger system function isn't better with the new barrel (I'm hoping the extra pressure generated will offset the lower pressure of commercial loads to cycle everything properly), I'll look into the SKS or AR15 trigger mods.
The firing pin and spring is question all even after the fix. It's crude and very thin. If I have future problems I'll go with a beefier firing pin and open up the firing pin channel appropriately.
The parkerized finish is not my cup of tea. When I repair the takedown system I'll blast it, give it some love with some 320 grit sandpaper and cold blue it. I am aiming for that thin, somewhat crude wartime finish with edge wear. I've had excellent luck with Oxpho blue gel and liquid on AK builds. Depending on how this PPSH turns out I'll probably give my TNW Suomi the same bluing treatment. I started a thread about this a few months ago and will take in all the good advice I got there!
I know these are plagued, bastardized conversions but I'm determined to get this thing running and looking the part. Even if the only remaining "SR-41" part is the receiver. Yes, it'll always be semi auto. Yes, it'll look like an ant eater with the extra barrel length. But it's as good as it gets for us oppressed Californians!
I would love to hear any input. Gotta say...this thing with a drum mag brings out your inner vodka fueled Ivan!
