Drilling the hole is the easy part. Tapping it is where it gets real interesting.

What kind of bolt is it? I'm pretty sure there are drill and tap kits available for certain kind of rifles. It's not as hard as it might seem... you could always practice a few holes on a scrap piece of steel until you feel comfortable. I live down in San Diego county..so kinda far. Best of luck to ya! I'd be happy to give you a crash course in drilling and tapping on here if you want!

Nice! Well, what I mean by that, is at least you can drill all the way through and use a standard tap (not a bottoming or plug tap) which makes finding the tools you need even easier! So basically find whatever bolt handle you want to mount to your bolt carrier, not too familiar of the brands of after market AR bolt handles or mounting kits they might supply, but suppose you could even use those AK bolt on extended charging handles and drill it out to whatever bolt you want to use and find the coresponding tap. Easiest way, without getting too heavy into it, is to just google a drill and tap chart. There's lots of free charts out there and some you can even type in the size bolt (diameter and TPI or thread pitch for metric) and it will give you what tap and drill to use.

Tomorrow, if I can steal some time away from the fam I'll drill and tape something and take pictures in a quick step by step.

Make sure you are drilling a piece of material that is about the same hardness/toughness as a drill bit.

It's funny, tomorrow I'm going to see that on my work bench and say "why the hell did I tap a drill bit?!!!"

Some drill bits drill quite effortlessly, some not so much. Same with chucking reamers. Most bolt carriers are harder/tougher than a hookers heart.

Is this for a side charging bolt?

Does the steel of a bolt take well to soldering? Can a hole be drilled, a handle be close-fitted, and soldered in place?
