    Barrel Vise

Anyone have any opinions on a barrel vise? Particular manufacture, pros and cons.

yeah the one from brownell's. the big one with the interchangeable bushings.

i've been using that style for 25 years. I use rosin to grip the barrel and preserve the finish. I use homemade action wrenches that grip inside the raceways right behind the locking lugs.

      Been using one of these.

Works much better than my old system of large pieces of steel and large fine thread bolts. Both work though. I have heard you can actully crush the barrel with the hydrolic type. I use rosin and maple blocks on barrels. I make action wrenches as needed.

I have put 25 tons of force on several bolt action barrels and not seen one get crushed yet.
I use aluminum clamp blocks and I am pretty sure the aluminum will yield before the steel will.
I only do this with heavy wall sections of barrel though.
A shotgun barrel would probably deform with less than a ton of force.

One can also bend a Howa 1500 sporter barrel by putting the bushing too far away from the receiver/wrench, and putting the muscle to it.
I saw a guy do it once...

Do you still have the barrel in your scrap heap?
