    1911 Short stroking

Hi guys. So I finished my 1911 build. I hand cycle it and it cycles smooth. I load one round and it extracts the casing pretty far when I hand cycle it. But when I fire it the ejection distance is super minimal and it doesn't lock the slide back I tried to use a lighter recoil spring and same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Slide length / frame type info needed.
Government slides move farther back than Commander / Officer's slides.
Does the slide move back all the way when the gun is fully assembled?
Does the slide move farther back with the recoil spring / rod etc. removed?
    Here's what a Gov't looks like:

      Here's what a Gov't looks like:
-It's a gov length slide on a gov frame.
-Yes the slide moves all the way back with the recoil system installed
-I'll Check the difference with and without the spring installed

Actually that pic is just one I grabbed off Google images.
That slide is being held back by the slide stop.
The slide should go back farther than in the pic.

So with the gun fully assembled, the slide goes back to where the notch on the slide for the stop is right above the slide release when in the down position so the slide has to go a little forward for the stop to be inside the notch.

As a note I can lock the slide back when hand cycling it

All the way back, with recoil spring removed but guide in place.

If you have full travel then the next thing to look for is the recoil spring being too long and coil binding...compressed to the point where there is no longer any gap between the coils before the slide has gone all the way back.
Weak ejection is a sign that the extracted case is not hitting the ejector hard enough.
                ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now the other sign of weak ejection when firing is not enough extractor hook tension.

                  Or too much extractor tension...
Too much holds on to the case TOO WELL.

I'm leaning towards the spring length now. When I compared the travel of the slide with and without the spring, it's significant. Without the spring, the slide stop notch travels beyond the slide stop but with the spring, the notch is just above the slide stop. Right now the recoil spring I have is 14lbs. I have ordered a set 14 and below.

                    Btw this is a 9mm 1911

Factory loads or reloads? If reloads you could be undercharging your cartridge.

I bet you end up around 10-11lbs on that 9mm spring.
