Pin and Welding issues for AR barrel

    Hi all,

First post, building up an AR and wanted to go with a 14.5" barrel. Was going to have it pin and welded, but checked with a couple of the local gun shops in the south bay- no one was doing this. But I had a talk with the gunsmith at one of the stores, great guy, who took some time to talk. He cautioned that with the high temperature needed, it would alter the barrel. So my question is, are there any serious consequences to having this procedure? Compromise the structure of the barrel?

    Thanks,

To weld a pin with TIG doesn't put enough heat into the barrel to alter anything.

The "gunsmith" is a special one. A pin/weld TIG literally takes less than half a second of welding. You can touch them right after.

You must be using way a LOT of current if it's done in less than half a second.
I am typically welding at around 40a and it's taking me a good 2-3 seconds to make a rosette weld that envelops the edges of the hole and the pin.
        I do these daily.

You can touch an inch away from the weld immediately, but I would give it a minute or so before I touched the weld with bare skin if I were you.

We are definitely putting FAR less heat into the barrel than would occur by firing 30 rounds in a minute.

I've done it with a MIG (because that's what I had) and the barrel itself didn't seem to get any heat in it. About the only way I'd expect the barrel to get hot is if you used oxy/fuel or something... or soldered the muzzle device on.

A downside to pinned muzzle devices is that you can't get the gas block over most, and therefore you can't change barrel nuts either.

                  JB weld is glue.
It is not an actual WELD.

Yep... Before Riflegear pinned mine, they called me twice to confirm that I was positive I wanted to use the gas block and barrel nut I had provided.
