RB grip conversion for Model 10

Awile back i did a SB to RB conversion on a Ruger Service Six(SB). It converted it to a Speed Six, matter of fact i used a pair of Speed fSix RB grips for a pattern. I'd like to have a RB 4" heavy barrel Model 10 Smith but have not found many up for sale. So i'm thinking about buying a shooter grade SB Model 10 and converting it. When i did the Ruger i was able to do all the work without impacting the serial number on grip frame butt....but after looking at my Model 15's serial number it looks like i'd need to remove part of the serial number on a Model 10....so my question is can i have the frame stamped or engraved with the serial number then do the work i want to do and be legal in reference to serial number?

Here is the rub, it is a federal crime to intentionally destroy or damage a serial number on a firearm and the BATFE may seize the weapon and prosecute you.

If the serial number is obliterated or accidently damaged it is illegal to transport, sell, receive, or possess. You can contact the BATFE and have the weapon inspected. They will need to issue you a letter of authority to allow you to have the frame in your position for the purpose of marking. The original serial number needs to be verified, and the BATFE field division will issue you a new serial number. Both serial numbers will need to be stamped into your frame and it will need to be inspected by the BATFE. If you refuse to have both serial numbers stamped into your frame the firearm will be considered contraband and will be seized by the BATFE.

The only other option I can think of is to contact the manufacturer and see they can stamp the serial number in a different location prior to you do any work to the firearm. They would have to give you some sort of letter that states that they did that service for you and it would have to follow the gun if it ever came into question. But my gut feeling is that they since manufacturers standardize where they stamp serial numbers they would not offer that, unless the serial numbers are located in a different place on the RB frame.

I believe the S&W S/N is far enough forward to allow the conversion to RB without hitting it.

I did one many many years ago on a Model 66 which I sold on consignment later at B&B guns without any issues.

Bought it for $100, sold close to $200.. PROFIT
