Caught 80% Bug

I decided to take up a new hobby and milled out my first 80%. Since I've never used a drill press before I picked up a few Polymers80's before I move to aluminum. As you can see by the picture the pocket and trigger hole is off center.. And I think the wall one right is too thin. My assumption is it won't function, but figured I'd post to get some feedback before I start on the next one.

If it was me and I couldn't afford a mill, I'd use a router. Even with a heavy duty drill press, they are just not made for lateral stress...The routers are not really designed for aluminum but they do a cleaner job.

I hate to ask, but who's template where you using. I hope at least for your sake you didn't measure and lay that out by hand...

You must not have had the template tight.

NOTE to self: don't ever use polymer lowers, that $#!T looks disgusting...

you may need to mill out the thicker side to get the hammer to hit the firing pin squarely and use a drop in trigger group but it may function

I used the jig that came with the Polymer80 Phoenix 2.0. It's two pieces that snap together.. Maybe I should have clamped it together too.

Aluminum, no jig. Layout done by hand.

After one understands the layout, it's not that difficult to do by hand. Nice work!

Crap, I think I misunderstood what you wrote. I thought you were saying to not ever layout by hand. I need to work on my reading comprehension skills.

Originally I was telling the OP that I hoped he hadn't done that layout by hand and gotten the results posted, since the lines are not straight.

I don't use the jig normally, but I do use the side plates to hold the lower in my vise.

With a caliper, some dykem, and the AR blueprints, most should be able to layout an FCG quite well.

Thanks for the feedback. I spent some time on it this morning to clean it up. I figure I'll use this one for more practice before I start the next one. Clamping the jig together and marking made a big difference.. don't know why they stopped shipping screws with the jig.

Question.. the Polymer 80 manufacture says to set the DP to 1800 RPM... my options are 1500 and 2075... I went with 1500.. What do you recommend?

I also caught that same bug, this weekend I milled and built a Polymer80 AR, a Polymer80 Glock, and for good measure a EP Armory polymer80. I used a drill press with X-Y vise and I am happy with the results. I am waiting on a Genesis80 and I might do a comparison on here if it has not been done before.

It's polymer. Cut it in pieces and do another until you figure it out.
