    Matrix 229 magazine catch problem

I started assembling my Matrix frame and I'm having problems with the magazine catch(mag release button).

It's not moving freely when depressed. It seems to be stuck halfway.

    What could be causing this?

The bigger problem that I have now is I can't get it free enough to push in the magazine catch stop to free it.

More than likely, when you pushed the retainer plate into place, the spring got pushed to the side and is catching on the body of the button thus limiting travel.

When installing that plate, great care needs to be taken to work the spring back to the middle of the plate as it slides into place. Use assembly grease so the spring slides along easier on the back side of the plate.

or there is a bur on one of the machined surfaces inside that it is hanging up on. Did you check how easy the button moved installed in the casting before assembly with the springs?

Stupid people don't know they are stupid. Because they are stupid. They will follow evil geniuses and do their bidding, because they are stupid.

Really super stupid people look up to, and follow stupid people like they were geniuses, because to them, they are. Unfortunately the reality of it is, that doesn't make stupid people any smarter.

That right there is the root cause to most problems in the world.

I did try the magazine catch before installing the springs. It did move freely. There were no burrs that I could see.

I'll double check and try your suggestions about centering the spring and using grease.

      Thanks!

when in doubt take it apart look at everything and start over, Never assume something is good until you verify it.

I guess I was rushing to put everything together. Don't try to do stuff like this late at night.

I finally got the mag catch out of the frame. The slot that the mag catch stop goes into wasn't smooth.

I missed it because it's hard to see even with a good light(at least for me).

And trying to get something in that area to smooth it out is a task unto itself!

Got it smooth enough now so the stop doesn't hang up when depressing the magazine release.

          Thanks for all the suggestions!!

I ran into the same problem you did. I had to use a stiff needle that was fine pointed enough to depress that catch enough so it pops out the mag release.

The mag release doesnt have the same problem when swapped to the right side of the frame.

Sorry this happened, I am really unhappy I didn't catch this sooner. Anyone experiencing this problem feel free to send the frame back to me for smoothing the area inside the mag catch grooves.

              Current production has this fixed.

That's very nice But myself personally don't think that's necessary. it's an 80% and should be gone over by the end user in every detail prior to final assembly, Problem is it's a plug and play world, they think these things should snap together like lego's or something.

That's why I will continue to purchase products from Matrix. Matrix stands by their products.

I never thought it was a snap together, no problem project. I expected to have to smooth out rough edges and to do minor filing.

But this being my first build, and not having the experience to notice, or look for areas that could cause problems, I thought I'd post a question and ask if anyone else had the same experience.

Besides, not every problem shows up until you try to put something together and it doesn't work the it's supposed to.

After all, I thought that's what forums were for. To exchange ideas and information.

Don't take my response the wrong way, and i was not trying to single you or this issue out.

We've had guys complain about tooling marks on uppers. Minor stuff that really is nothing to complain about.

Then we have people that can't read the stickies, refuse to use the search function, and just want to be spoon fed info because their googlefu failed them, when i can try once and get a load of search hits??

Boggles my mind how some people can get through the day with barely two brain cells to rub together.

Don't take that rant the wrong way either.. I expect people that are just learning to ask some ridiculous questions,, what i don't expect is to have to treat a grown man like a five year old..

The state of this country rides on the self centered lackadaisical 18-25 year old that's lucky if he can figure out the business end of the weapon. Yet there also seems to be a bunch of 40 year old adolescents too but that's another rant
