Measuring engraving depth?

How do you determine the engraving depth on a receiver, to make sure that it is at the minimum .003" requirement?

Maybe a run out gauge/dial indicator with a very fine needle tip. Calipers depth gauge is too big to fit down into the letters.

A screw thread micrometer would work, but also depends on the receiver.

If you don't have anything that fits in there to measure...

Generally speaking, a piece of cigarette paper is 0.001" thick. Stack a chunk of paper three deep, slice the edge with a razor for a clean view, and set it next to your engraving. Just eye-ball it with a magnifier.

Peen a chunk of lead into the engraving. Measure with a mic and subtract that measurement from the smear.

Dial indicator with a pointed tip and a collar.
Zero the indicator/point on a flat surface and then the indicator will read how deep the point it when it's down into the engraving.

Establish a 0,0,0 and test your base line.

Go from there.

Use plastiguage to press into your engraving.

Old engine builders "must have" tool.
Push it in, pull it out, cross section, measure.
Won't stick either.

Take a pencil "lead" from a mechanical pencil (.005") and break off a small piece, put it in the groove and measure the height.

Measure the "lead" piece, just to be sure, and figure out the difference.
If it is .003 or more, you are more than OK, because the "lead" will not touch the bottom of the groove.
