Threading a shotgun barrel for choke tubes?

Brainstorming a possibly dumb idea, and looking for ideas/costs/alternatives.

Is it reasonable to think that something like this barrel

could be bought, and have it threaded for chokes? And also put a better sight on it?

I'd like to run a 18.5" barrel for turkeys, but haven't been able to find one with anything besides a bead sight and cylinder choke.

Why would you want chokes for a 18inch barrel?

    Now I see sorry.

It all depend on the ID of the barrel and the wall thickness. Something that is Cylinder bore is going to most likely be on the thin side.

the other thing is the expense, It's not cheep getting a shot gun barrel threaded. usually far more then the cost of a new barrel. then add the cost of chokes. it gets expensive quick

It's typically about $100 for a choke tube installation job.
Then a choke tube is around $25.
There are diameter limitations for the different types of choke tubes so you have to go with the type of tubes that will safely fit your barrel.

I have 12ga tooling for Rem-Choke, Win-Choke, Browning Invector, Mossberg Accu-Choke, Weatherby and tru-choke thinwall tubes.

Any barrel can have different sights fitted.

Why not just buy different barrels for the gun? Probably cheaper than installing choke tubes. If you want better sights buy a slug barrel.

Great. Ask about an 18" barrel for turkeys, and you send me to a 24" barrel with rifling. So helpful. If I had seen an 18.5" barrel with threads for chokes, then this wouldn't be a question to ask now would it? Ever shoot shot out of a rifled barrel?

That's what I was wondering, if any of the short Mossberg barrels are thick enough to thread. So far, I have been unable to find a short-ish barrel that is threaded, and I don't want a 24 or longer. Cost of chokes is expected, and used barrels are cheap.

Other ideas, or any leads on 18-20" threaded barrels?

I'm not concerned with which specific choke I'd wind up using, so I guess that makes it easier. What wall thickness would be needed to be able to do it? I've got a couple of old barrels I'd be perfectly willing to chop up, if the idea is feasible!

Ha. Wal-Mart of all places has exactly what I want. And ebay has them for a hundred bucks.

              Thanks kcstott and Randall!

And in case anyone else ever has a crazy idea similar to mine, here's what I'm going to wind up ordering... Cheap enough that if it doesn't work, no big deal, and I can spray paint it without worry.

Why such a short barrel for turkeys?

I always use my 28" so I can reach out and touch them......

A 10" longer barrel only gets you 10" longer distance...
FPS per inch of barrel is negligible, and shot pattern between 18 and 28, all other things being equal and the same chokes, is the same. Shotguns don't work the same as rifles.

I'm perfectly willing to sacrifice shorter sight plane and inferior balance, for far superior maneuverability.

Well you do gain a little.....more speed and the wad holds longer on the shot but those fancy turkey chokes my not make a difference. With a longer barrel you have better aim which is important for turkey hunting.

Eh. 15 or 20 fps does not matter. If I can't hit a turkey head with a shotgun that has quality sights on it at 30 yard, I need to pick up a new hobby. I've killed hundreds of dove and quail with a similar 18" cylinder setup, and not had the option of chokes. Now it's even more versatile.

Wow that is a very inexpensive barrel,, nice find... If that bead is threaded on you could replace it with a hi-viz or tru-glo front site... There is a hi-viz front site kit that comes with 4 different threaded screws and different colored lite pipes that would work great... Good luck... Cheers...

Edgerly, sure you can. I've done it many times.
...headed to one in about an hour or so actually.

Steve, that's the plan! Maybe a red dot down the road, but for now I think this will be perfect. It came in a week or two ago, haven't had a chance to mess with it yet. It's going to get rattle can camo after I pattern it too. Cheap enough I don't care!
