AR15 - Can this modification be made ???

I haven't really looked into it yet (the idea just came to me), but I thought I'd get some knowledgeable opinions on the possibility / practicality of it. It might be a work-around (one option, anyway) to by-pass the new law that recently passed making a Semi-auto, centerfired AR15 an Assault Weapon.

Can the bolt catch and/or magazine be modified to catch the bolt open after every shot, even though there are still live rounds remaining in the mag? If so, then the modification would render the rifle out of the realm of being a semi automatic. After every shot, you would have to hit the bolt release to slam the bolt into battery, loading the next round. Coupled with a BAD lever (for convenience / speed), this would negate the need for a bullet button, and also it as referenced above, would take the firearm out of being classified as being an assault weapon, and thus the need for registration.

Is this modification possible and/or practical (and if so, how?), or I'm I being a total duffus grabbing at straws here? For the nay-sayers, Yes, there are other work-arounds, new products, going feature-less, etc etc etc, but I'm specifically asking about this mod and if it can be done. Any thought out there?

Already thought about that. How on earth could they outlaw modifying a semi-auto into a single shot? Could they out law replacing a barrel that hasn't been drilled for a gas block? Could they outlaw changing and putting on a different upper? I think not. I understand what you're saying for other types of work arounds, But for this? It's a little TFH and over the top in IMO

This just requires drilling one hole in the lower receiver, under the bolt catch, and then re-locating the bolt catch plunger and spring into the new hole.

The problem with the idea is that you could simply hold the bolt stop and then shoot the gun in semi-auto.

Just plug the gas hole in the barrel and run a side charging upper.

Or do like what you suggest but modify the bolt release so that you can't hold it open until the bolt carrier locks back.

The fact is they can write any bill they so desire. The governor has to sign the BS and then the courts need to sort it out.

But it falls on the fire two steps, write any rediculous bill you like and see if it flys

What you are suggesting has already been done by the Brits. I'm sure it is documented somewhere.

Now that there IS a problem . I guess sacrifices have to be made somewhere ....

so i guess it would change it from semi-automatic to semi-semi-automatic

In CA, bills submitted to the governor pass by default if the governor does not specifically VETO them.
He either gets to make a news conference event of signing them or of vetoing them within 15 days or he can "closet sign" by merely ignoring it and not holding a press conference.
Notice that he neither signed no vetoed the "non serialized guns" bill before he went on vacation?
                        You can guess what's coming...

Yeppers, at least one outfit calls it "lever release". They also do straight-pull bolt action stuff.
