    Removing rust

A few weeks ago I ran into a guy that had gotten a DWI and was in need of money.
He had a Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 357 Mag. that he wanted to sale. I offered $60 because It was ugly and he said yes.

It's a little rusty and missing the rear sight blade and has some ugly grips. Other the that the gun is in great shape.

Oh! I did give the guy a little advise when it comes to drinking and driving. " Beer taste better in a La-Z-Boy."

To remove rust without damaging any of the finish that is left is not hard when using an electrolysis.
The set up is very easy. You will need a plastic container, copper wire, backing soda, some scrap metal and an old charger with an output around 6 to 8 volts.

Add one teaspoon of baking soda for every galon of warter you put in your container.
Cut the end off the charger and attch the Pos. to the sctap metal. Attch the Neg. tp the parts you want to remove the rust from. Be sure that the scrap metal does not touch your good stuff.
Now plug in the charger and let it do it's work.

In an hour or two remove the rust will have been melted away.
Use boiling water to pour on the parts after you remove them from the container. This will clean off and dry your parts. Next scrub the parts with good gun oil and a nylon brush. Wipe everything clean and put it back together.

Well here it is all cleaned up. Can you guess how I did it?

I had the grips in my parts box. They came off my first New Model Blackhawk that was stolen back in 1991.

With that much rust, you could have carded it to a blue.

Electrolysis has saved a lot of rust buckets for me. I use washing soda, but I will try baking soda next time.

There was some light pitting in a few spots, but nothing bad.

Damn fine job, I would have sent it into ruger for a "tune up" but DYI is even more rewarding.

Electrolisis is great. It is as easy and as gunny describes. I have saved many junk auto parts with it. I use a metal basket for small stuff, for nuts and bolts so the whole basket touches the bolts and its all the negative. People shy away from it fearing the electricity and water I assume, too much watching TV I guess. It's low voltage and amperage, harmless. My biggest tub is like 20 gallon and runs off just a few amps at 12 volt. It seems like a line of sight sort of deal so surrounding the perimeter of you tub with the positive is helpful. My 20 gallon is round with rebar every 6 inches or so for the positive. You definetly want scrap metal for the positive as it will be ruined. Rebar is cheap, I just cut another handful and swap em out when they get nasty and use hose clamps to attach the wire. There's plenty of info online about it, with proper terminology too. Good job saving old junk Gunny!

                  Thanks Not76
The first time I saw someone using Electrolisis to remove rust it was on auto parts. I have been using it to clean gun parts for a few years now.
Here is the triggerguard for one of my M1 Carbines that I cleaned up.

Can this method be also used for general cleaning of parts that are "gunked" up? I am thinking of something that was packed away for a long time where the lube has collected dust enough to harden in all of the nooks and crannies.

No. That requires solvent. gasoline works quite well for this.

Thanks, time to break out the solvent tank for a little soak then hosing off.

Make your own aluminum paste and wear breathing protection. Take fine grit sand paper (taped to a table) and grind an aluminum part on the sandpaper slowly to accumulate aluminum dust. Mix it into an acid paste from a potato. This is heavier application of the use of aluminum foil (which is very time consuming).

acid paste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oatGVdtPMS8 . The acid converts the oxidation into a greasy black phosphate.
