Gun screws are usually a finer pitch. For instance, muzzle brakes are a different pitch than a standard fine thread. Not sure what the OP is considering a gun screw. Screws for the DBM are standard US . scope rail screws are a finer thread. Internal screws in a receiver are usually a finer thread. It varies.

This is good news. Thanks for the heads up. I hope they start carrying gun screws at all their locations. I'm going to check my local Ace Hardware this weekend. I just stripped a screw on my GSR's scope base, and I don't want to pay shipping for one screw.

Ya my local one has the same section. It's just a couple drawers of small, fine thread screws that are often found in rings and bases etc. Just sizes that alot of hardware stores don't carry anymore. I picked up a gunsmith "kit" of assorted screws a couple years ago so I've been safe, but it's nice to know they have some for those times the carpet eats a tiny screw

Well. It may be just me... But i don't buy my hardware even home use hardware from a hardware store. Homedepot, Lowe's, ACE and the like typically sell junk screws and bolts made from some amalgam of iron and lard. that or I need a box and all they have is three in a bag for the price I'd pay for a box.

I get my stuff from Brownell's for the gun specific screws and bolts, and McMaster or fasten all for anything I want a specification tied too.

The hardware stores don't stock those bins, its a service from Hilman. Apparently, Hilman now has a small selection of gun screws. The screws are blued and in "typical" gun screw sizes, whatever that might mean. In my store, its two typical pull-out hilman bins just stuck on top of the rest of the bins.

I could see using one in a pinch, but I'd immediately be ordering the correct screw anyway. That is, if I could find a suitable fastener from the selection. I doubt I could other than the odd rail or scope mounting screw.

FWIW, none of my guns are blued, so it wouldn't match even if the head, pitch, diameter, and length were correct.

You're also an expert machinist and toolmaker. Your standards for precision products are likely much different than someone like myself. That being said, that's why I got myself the screw kit from brownells... I've shredded my fare share of cheap mounting hardware

I was happy they had a selection of grade 8 bolts, gun screws were a added benefit
