    1911builders

Not here to discredit or condone their business practices, but I saw at the gunshow today that they took another company's product (Matrix Precision), laser engraved their own logo on it, and marketed it as their own (at the gun show at least). says nothing about the quality of what they sell overall, maybe it's just me but that doesn't seem right.

Here is the Matrix Precision Tool:

Here is what they were selling at the gun show:

did you ask about them ?

how is it "shady" , maybe they are buying them for resale. or the actual manufactures of the matrix ones and selling under there name... how do you know ?

please provide more info such as prices and name of who is selling them ......

confused about what you meant in bold. other than that, I didn't ask about price. they obviously are buying and selling them for resale. The younger guy said this was their decking jig when I asked what it was.

regarding the principle of it, if you made something and sold it to the public, then I bought a bunch, put my name on it and sold it as mine...well I guess I wouldn't care since you already paid me, but to take credit for it; seems like a certain level of integrity is missing there.

Did Matrix Precision put a patent on the jig? If not, there's not a whole lot they can do. I say that having bought the decking jig direct from Matrix Precision, and then also being severely disappointed when the "hardened drill rods" were quickly filed off. Maybe I'm a little sour...it definitely hurts to see this new one is the "improved version."

Either way, there are plenty of instances of someone creating something, and another company creating the same or nearly the same thing and selling it at the same or lower cost. If there isn't any patent or copyright protection in place, tough luck.

So do you not buy Kirkland or Ralph's brand grocery store items? How do you know both company's don't just contract the same company to make the jig?
Would you not buy a spike tactical lower if you knew it was made by aero precision instead of spikes? Cause a lot of companies don't actually make the product they sell, they just stamp their name on it.

all very valid points. I don't know enough to speculate or accuse. but at face value looks like they just bought them and put their name on it, which would imply that its yours and further enforced by when the younger dude said "this is our decking jig". maybe he meant this is our decking jig that we sell.

in my opinion if someone takes something that someone else made and takes credit for it and sells it, it's not very honorable. this whole post is just my opinion, which at the end of the day is just an opinion.

Well Matrix states on it's site that the tool is specifically for 1911 builders frames that need decking. Most of the other 80% frames have you cut the barrel seat instead. I also believe that on the 1911 builders site, they sell the matrix jig as a matrix jig:

All that to say, might have been a collaboration between the companies.

probably read into it wrong. again my account is of that specific situation and the way it was being presented. makes me PERSONALLY have questions/reservation, and just felt like sharing.

I personally prefer to deal with Matrix directly on tool purchases because they've always been professional and replaced dated tools no questions asked even after I've used them. That decking jig you showed is the newest one made by matrix, which includes the Hammer and sear hole drill guides. I'm going to see if I can trade in my old decking jig for this new one with matrix.

Matrix sells their jig cheaper than 1911builder anyway. In this case, matrix is just the OEM maker of the tool so technically speaking 1911builders can market it however they want.

If you're worried about it, contact who you believe to be the originator of the product.

Maybe 1911 Builders bought a bunch at wholesale.

Buddy's aunt had a pizza place in Malibu. She then made personal pizzas and sold them at Trader Joes. Her name is no where on the pizza. Trader Joes buys them and slaps their name on it.

Knowing both companies, doesn't seem like 1911 Builders were trying to get over on anyone. Also, maybe the guy running the booth didn't know either.
