    Scope Sliding in Rings

I level my scope perfectly, tighten everything down. Still level. Now I don't have a torque screwdriver, but I tighten those suckers down until it's hard for me to turn them with the long lever of the allen wrench. They are at the point where if I continue I will strip the heads. Anyway, I go to the range and everything is fine for the first few rounds then the scope slides mm by mm due to recoil ruining all the work I've put into it.

Is there a cheap and effective way to prevent this? Something I can put inside the rings to prevent slip perhaps? They are the off brand scope rings that came with the R783 combo. I replaced the scope and now I cannot get the scope to stay still! I'm trying to exhaust all options before spending the money on new, much better rings.

Also, if I need to get new rings, which I'm thinking I probably will, what are some good suggestions you all have?

Sandpaper to the inside of the rings. Not much. Just rough it up

I spent money on a decent shooting rifle. I spent money on a decent optic. I want to use the cheapest rings possible to attach the two together. Humm, what's wrong with this picture? Get a decent set of rings that fit your new optic. Sanding the rings isn't going to help.

Some of the responses on these forums...
Thanks, CSA. Clearly I was headed that direction. Maybe you could help in suggesting a good set of rings instead of being derogatory?

Lap the rings, tighten ring screws to recommended ft-lbs with a F.A.T Wrench (usually 15 ft/lbs.), use Blue Loctite on the screws.

If you are already tightening the rings with an Allen just to point of "Oh God, I am going to strip it!", and it still is moving, time to check if you have the proper ring size for scope barrel.

No need for sarcasm. Cannon was spot on.

They are the correct size. I know this for a fact.

Don't mean to be a smartass, but:

If you "know" they are the right size and they are tightened, why are they slipping?

                    Measure twice, cut once.

Go back to basics and measure. (or look up what you bought)

I've been asking myself the same question, along with what I should do to fix it.

Last post for the night, tired.

Stop, take a breath and start from the top.

Measure all, check it, then come to conclusion.

If you think it is right and it is failing, something is not right.

Really, the solution is better rings. But you could also try strips of friction tape applied to the inside of the ring halves.

I highly DO NOT recommend that last part. Use double side tape it's got a lower profile and will squeeze out if you over tighten where grip tape won't. OP take you rings and a tape measure, measure the rings your self, inside diameter. Then measure your scope. If everything checks out, buy a set of Leupold Rings. And make sure you LAP them before install...

Clean the inside of the rings and the scope tube with alcohol, get rosin from a music store or sporting goods, (pitcher's rosin bag). Apply to inside of rings and set your screws. Murdering the screws isn't a really good idea. It will stretch the rings and can pinch the tube. Invest in an inexpensive torque screwdriver like the Fat Wrench. They make a digital one now too. Lots of good rings out there, I favor Burris and Warne myself. Good luck.
