    338 RUM conversion

So I picked up a slew of 338 RUM ammo, and have been searching for a fairly priced Rem 700 to add to my collection. The key word is fairly priced. It seems like everyone wants an arm and a leg for anything decent. Sooo.. I been thinking of going at it in another direction. I have an ADL in 7mm Rem Mag, and wondered if it would be feasible to rebarrel it to a 338, and what a ball park cost might be from a gunsmith?? Maybe someone more experienced might have an idea. I think it would be just R&R'ing the barrel since the 7 and the RUM are built on the same 375H&H case. Also any suggestions on a good laminate stock source?? Thanks for any info.

That certainly gets me thinking about changing direction. I have very little in the 700 due to a series of trades. So tossing a few more bucks at it won't hurt. Any thoughts on a bbl, or maybe stick with an OEM Remington?? Stainless maybe?? I wonder I they sell fluted Sendero Bbl's?? Anyway thanks for the response.

Not sure which way to go on the stock. Walnut with some figure, or laminate??

the stock all depends on what you are trying to build.

You can get a turned blank from Shilen for $200 I think $250 for stainless

then you need a smith to thread chamber and headspace.

or you could find a take off barrel. which would not be a bad deal. You might be able to find a sendero take off barrel but i doubt you are going to get a Remington barrel from Remington with it being attached to an action.

Ebay is your friend in that department. for stocks too. since you have the most common action around it should be easy to find what you are looking for.

There's a 300 RUM barrel on ebay right now for $50

          Just an FYI
There is a 90% or better chance a factory Rem take-off will headspace to your action.
There is a 90% or better chance that the barrel markings will not index so you can read them.

All good info, but I'd be looking for a 338 RUM 26". I go way back on eBay and it would be a place to shop. The problem I'm running into lately is a lot of sellers are dealing in seconds and asking damn near retail. The other problem is the 338 RUM bbl only would be a needle in a haystack.

I guess I'll need to contact Rem and ask. I picked up a model 7 without the bolt for a song, and they replaced the intire action/bbl. It cost a bit, but I now own a mint unfired 7 in 222rem. New serial number and all. Liked your reply... :-)

I have head space gauges for that caliber. If you do find a take-off barrel I can fit it for you. Also, Pac-Nor or McGowan can provide a "pre-fit", and Douglas can provide a deep chamber pre fit. With the exception of the nut barrels, most of these pre fits require skills and tools (aka gunsmith) to put them on right.

Why don't the sights align when I screw the barrel in?
                Remington made both barrels...

Thanks for the offer Ken, but Oakhurst is quite a trip from Carmichael for this old guy... :-) Might be better off finding someone local. Sure wish Charlie Young were still around...

No big deal for the Brown Truck or USPS. You can ship it to me, and go about your regular affairs. No need to take a days off or drive to hell and gone and wait around for work to be done. Whats with that?? I am FFL licensed and insured. Let me know if I can help.

Never thought it would be por nada.... Charlie Young was a gunsmith with his shop behind G&M Sportsman's Den in Roseville back in the 70's. Great guy and did awesome work.

Hey, I have trouble talking myself into going to the post office. I leave all the traveling and B.S. to the younger crowd.... Always put off today what you can do tomorrow... :-)

After this great discussion, and all the good advice, I went another direction and picked up a Rem 700LSS/338RUM in Lodi. Almost broke the bank, but I'm pleased....
