Machining projects / ideas?

I have a small lathe and plan to get a (much bigger) manual mill later this year. Not a machinist but I've dabbled in making precision parts for a non-firearm project and enjoyed it. Does anyone have a source for receiver designs that are not overly difficult?

I am not equipped for heat treatment, which could be a show-stopper (?). Commercial parts especially bolts and barrels or blanks are fine, not planning to cut rifling. Receiver must be an 80% or less.

I would love to make a nice 22 single shot for my little boy to learn with (in a few years) but I'm open to other suggestions that are legal and safe.

I'm aware of the 80% 1911 and AR receivers. AKs look too hard.

Tactical Machining make 80% 10/22 receivers. Not in stock very often though.

Ak's wouldn't be too bad. You could make most of your own tooling. That would be several machining projects right there.

Yes, but you can do it with a torch if you are only worried about doing the ejector and the axis pin holes.

Or you can buy heat treated receiver blanks from Childers.

OR you can use the lathe to make the myriad of jigs and tools and tooling and parts and pieces that accessorize what you have.

Major projects seem to write themselves while you are working on that small stuff. Then you have the jigs ready to work on the big stuff.

What about the 10/22 jig? Any estimate on when they will be in stock?

Find a copy if "single shot rifles" by Frank deHaas. Spelling of the name might be wrong.....
I haven't looked at my copy in a long time, but I think there were a couple of designs where you might have fun.

I suppose you could use screws, but it would look like sh*t and be more work than welding.
