Tools to build an AR?

I'm thinking of building an AR15 from scratch. What specialized tools are needed to complete the build.

I have a lot of tools from the days when I worked on boats but most will not apply to a gun.

1. Bench vise?
2. Barrel wrench?
3. Roll pin punches?

Scratch as in 80% lower plus stripped upper? Figure out the parts you want beforehand. That may steer you in the direction of tool sets.

Roll pin HOLDERS should be on that list, too. I hate roll pins but that's a fact of a build. Look up techniques to drive in roll pins, it'll save you tons of frustration.

Upper and lower receiver vise blocks. Lots of choices out there. - EDIT: skip that vise block. Save your cash and use some 2x4 pieces to fit your magwell and upper receiver. I forgot that I did that for a 308 upper.

Barrel nut wrench can be specific to the barrel nut for your build. YHM, ALG, and few others are proprietary.

AR wrench

Torque wrench

Anti-seize and other grease/lube

I just built a couple with channel locks, e-tape, small copper hammer, flathead for the grip. Needle nose pliers and a razor blade for the front pivot pin detent.

I used to hammer bolt catches. No mas. I use channel locks and squeeze them in.

I haven't put mine to together yet. Still waiting on parts but the list of tools required seems to be very subjective.

I think after building 1 or 2 we all end up with our own custom kit.

I built my first one in the early 90's in dads garage about a year before the Crime bill went into effect. You couldn't buy a complete AR for less then $2000

Used regular automotive mechanics tools nothing else. Upper was built though so it was lower assembly only.

Now I have a damn good collection of stuff.

Made my own tools except for the combo tool.

Bill, a bench vise is a plus, but then you probably know this.
1)This is the only roll pin punch I feel is a must

3) You'll probably need some HEADSPACE GAUGES if you build the upper

Excellent information. I haven't decided on a 80% build or a blank but registered lower.

My2 cents

One ...warning first one you build will lead to many others and become an addiction... 2 YouTube videos are your friend... 3 harbor freight is your friend....buy cheap tool box start filling as you go lol... Lowers price of cake... Buy a good armor's wrench either ebay amazon or next gun show.. 20 -30 dollars well spent when you start building your own uppers... And castle nut on buffer tubes for lowers..
