Actual school is Lassen in Northern California. I don't think there is anything in Southern Cali.

Do you only want to know more about 1911s? There are AGI courses on DVDs, etc. Nothing will come close to having actual school education though with hands on instruction.
Hobbies: bla, bla, bla... Bought a Mosin Nagant... Guns, Guns, Guns...

20 years ago I bought all the 1911 books, videos and took some machine shop classes. I didn't go gunsmithing school.

I am willing to work on my own guns, thinking of picking up an 80% grams to play with. Hope I don't screw up much. Wish I had someone close so I could learn & have a back up

Got a place in Fontana also, but live in OC most of the time.

I too purchased books, watched videos and read hundreds of posts from some of the premier 1911 gunsmiths past and present. Best thing to do is learn one part-installation at a time, but have the actual thing in front of you to get hands on experience. Once you get over the fear of messing up, every "mishap" you experience will be the best teaching tool for future builds. Just today, I thought about making some mods I've read and seen on my slide stop, and ended up creating more problems for my almost completed build... Good thing I had a spare slide stop laying around so problem solved, and most importantly, lesson learned!

I feel sometimes the gunsmiths classes get too involved into technical details of the installation and make it intimidating for newbies. You'll find that if you just go slow the first time, it is not easy to make a mistake.

This is fun! Learn all you can (YouTube, forums, etc.), but don't get bogged down with learning.

Experience is the best teacher. Buy an inexpensive gun, add the simple parts to make it better. Great way to learn.

                          ^ what drmjf said.

But be careful what inexpensive gun you get to play with. Some maker's frames and or slides are so far away from spec that trying to modify them will cause you major frustration. I'm not saying it cannot be done, just YMMV.

bought the RIA tactical, thinking of adding the front strap serrations to start, going to see how well it shoots BEFORE I start messing with it. but I might just try and see how much I can experiment with it.
