S&W K model cracked forcing cone

Can this barrel be saved? Can the crack be turned off and the barrel set back a few threads?

How about picture of the crack? How far does it go? It's probably why the barrel is floating around loose now, it was scrapped out a long time ago.
That's an older pinned barrel. S&W no longer supports earlier production guns.
It's no big deal to cut it shorter and re-index the barrel, the real pain is re-fitting the lock.
Duct tape some old grips to it and see if you can get $50 at the SF Gun "Buy Back".

Crack is about 1/8" wide and perhaps .030 deep --
KD you are correct it is a loose barrel with a perfect bore --
It was my though also that refit would be a bit of bother -
perhaps it will be fodder for some sort of project --

          Barrel is trash.
          Crack will continue to grow.

          Watch ebay etc.
I saw a complete Model 19 parts kit, less frame, on there for $150 a couple weeks ago.
Yes it sold before I could get it.

I have had a couple S&W barrels set back, one for pitting and one for cylinder gap after removing end shake. both came out fine. At least look into it, can't hurt.

The metal of the forcing cone is "hammer" hardened now, it has become brittle and fatigued.
Metal parts can have a life span, specifically metal in high-stress areas.
(Note how airplanes are approved only for a certain number of take-offs and landings due to metal fatigue).
Trimming off a few thousands of an inch to re-fit the barrel won't fix the barrel metal itself.
Given the time and cost of a barrel rework and refit, it is better to replace this barrel.

                Ojisan -
you are correct, a crack will continue if not stopped --
A .030 deep crack will be stopped by a .060 - .080 cut -- crack will not continue if it is not there.
Lots of cracks on various materials are stopped by simply "stop drilling".
Your reference to aircraft would indicate you know this -

The rest of your opinion is just that --

However, I do agree that refitting the cut off barrel is more work than I would want to do and certainly not worth paying to have done.

As I said, perhaps it will be useful for some another project not requiring a lugged barrel -

thanks to all for their opinions --
