CMP ADVANCED GARAND WORKSHOP - GO OR NO GO

I received an email informing me I have been drawn for a CMP garand build workshop. The lottery was last week.

While I think it would be interesting, I really don't need another garand, and the total cost with travel and hotels plus workshop looks to be around $2,600.00.

I do like shooting the garand, and it may be the only damn semi left legal in California in a few years.

Any comments or thoughts? Has anyone been to the workshop? I think I read an excellent write up in this forum by a member who attended one...can't seem to find it now.

It's a once in a lifetime experience and you leave with a rifle built the way you want. I have been considering it, but got hit hard by the tax man the last few years.

I have a shooter grade Garand as well but I would do everything to be at this class.

You can learn everything to build a Garand on your own, no expensive classes needed. I honestly cant imagaine what they could spend that many class room days on . Garand building isnt that hard, not much more difficult than a AR

Hmmm, can you sell your spot in the build?

Do it! If it's feasible for you, do it. I think joefrank scored a spot too.

Yet there's a guy in Arizona that charges $4000 for a AK build class.

he said $2600 was the total cost. Hotel travel and the class. so the class is actually dirt cheep. And if you think building a Garand is like building an AR you have a lot to learn about the Garand

I totally agree, not too many people have tried to mill the receiver from a casting. I have and its a real pain and cost a heck of a lot more money on tooling than a AR...

Well there is that but I mean the selection of the correct fitting parts and proper assembly.

It's not terribly difficult but it's not an AR by any stretch.

The Garand course is teaching you how to build a National Match rifle. there are a hand full of respected smiths out there that build NM Garand's its not an easy process, time consuming. but what this joker don't realize is the parts inventory you have access to. So this joker would not want to walk into Colt's, or FN's warehouse and build a rifle from parts with guidance from an Armor??

$2600 with hotel and airfare is a bargain

Go. I took my 14 year old son. He was successful with great guidance. It was a fun and worthwhile trip.

If you can afford it, go. Go forth and make the rest of us jealous. I would go in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

No thats not what you said. you said "Not much more difficult then an AR"

and I have to wholeheartedly disagree.

AR's are built to know and published specs and parts that are NIB mil spec.

Garands were built to spec 70 years ago. wear and tear and your parts may or may not be in spec.

Barrel timing doesn't apply to an AR unless you're Randall.
Receiver inspection and timing doesn't apply to an AR

                              You don't bed AR's
                              You can't bed a Garand like a Rem 700.

No it's not rocket science but you can't snap together a Garand in two hours from new untried parts like you can an AR.

I get what you mean but lets take the full meaning into consideration.

There are guys out there that never picked up a screw driver before. They can build an AR but they can not build a Garand.
