Not to steal your thunder, as I'm sure your offered calipers do serve their purpose. I've actually got a couple harbor freight/home depot style ones for rough measuring, but for a real digital caliper it's gotta be Mitutoyo or eq.

I have a Mitutoyo 8" and 6" Digimatic that I have used everyday for 8 years and they're still going strong.

How expensive are Mitutoyo calipers? Their prices seem to range from $40 to $500. Which sets are you referring to?

The reason I posted this is because a lot of people buy the $20 Frankford Arsenal digital calipers (or something similar) and after I barely dropped my set the broke. The General Tools digital caliper cost me $35 at Home Depot and is excellent! I would really prefer not to spend $100+ on calipers if I can avoid it.

Mitutoyo 6 inch digitals range from 70-90 bucks and the dial calipers runs for 60 bucks.

This is pretty standard practice with all calipers.
Just don't drop them.

Don't skimp on measuring tools.

Also, you can only trust calipers to a couple thousandths accuracy.
For better accuracy, get micrometers.

I told you before and I'll continue to repeat it: the milling machine is the cheap part.
It's all the little stuff that really adds up.

I recommend taking your time and buying top quality tooling/measuring equipment on eBay.
It takes lots of research time and waiting for the deal, but you do get the best deal that way.
I bought a mitutoyo 0.0001" test indicator on ebay this week for under $25.
They run $150 new.

I got this one for FREE! It's made out of plastic, so when I drop it, it doesn't break!




The batteries in my digital caliper were dead, so this cheapo unit was the first one I found out of the tool boxes.

I used some Harbor Freight digitals for a long time and they were actually very accurate. I only stopped using 'em because I wore out the jaws a little by handling them roughly. I then bought some Mitutoyo digitals but haven't really started using them.
