    Mossberg and Savage

    Hi Guys,
Are Mossberg & Savage center fire bolt action rifle barrels interchangeable? I have a Mossberg 4x4 in .270 I am considering barreling to .30-06.

I can't answer your question as I have not found the thread specs, but if you pull a barrel off a mossberg 4x4 and measure the threads and take a photo of the breech with a cartridge all the way into the chamber, that would help to answer the question.
Savage thread specs are 1.055x20 with a flat breech and the cartridge or headspace gauge should stick out of the barrel about 1/8".

The more I think about this, the more I think I have no idea where on earth I got the idea that Savage and Mossberg had the same barrel thread specs. Just hoping I guess. I was hoping it would be a quick and easy way to build a .30-06/35 Whelen switch barrel rifle. Yes I could use a Savage action but I have always considered the Savage action to the second ugliest action ever devised.

Is the 4x4 the same as the Mossberg ATR?

The ATR barrel has 20 tpi major thread is 1", minor thread is .950". The breech of the atr is flat just as the Savages are . The ATR is the same design as the Savage including the extractor but again not interchangeable. The bolt face is deeper on the ATR by about .020" so the standard Savage pre-fit barrels will be chambered too long.

Just found this on the Mossberg MVP:

The barrel tennon is 1.400" long from breech face to shoulder. There is an undercut to .825" that is .075" wide with a 45 degree blend into the threads. Breech face has a 45 degree edge break to .820" diameter. No extractor cut or any other face work besides radiusing the chamber mouth.

          The tennon threads are 7/8 X 28

          Major .8738 - .8673"

          Pitch .8506 - .8468"

          Minor .8312"

              Thanks.
I just added those to my barrel tennons spreadsheet...
