    AK barrel thread tool

I just spent the last hour grinding carefully through the thread protector on my Vepr only to discover there are no threads under it to protect. It's smooth as a baby's butt, the damn thing was just glued on. Those crazy russians. So now I have a flash suppressor but nothing to thread it onto.

Does anybody have a 14x1 LH threading tool that they would loan out? I'm in the Berkeley area. If not, can anyone recommend a gunsmith for the job? I just don't want to buy the tap to thread a single barrel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Technically, you need a die not a tap, and you also need a pilot if you want the threads to be straight and the muzzle device you attach to be perfectly aligned with the bore. You also may need a crush washer to help index your muzzle device if it is directional and needs to be indexed. And you'll want some cutting fluid, along with a padded vise.

Here is a good video that shows the procedure.

I have the tooling and some thin jam nuts I made up for indexing the brake. If you cant find anyone local you can ship it to me.

It looks like buying everything I need is about $70. I'm not sure what a gunsmith would charge for the job but it would probably be close, especially factoring driving in. I guess I'll call the two or three I see in the area. But I may end up just buying the tools.

          A few pointers from experience.

          1. Never use a die to create threads unless it's you only option

          2. Pay the money to have a skilled gunsmith or machinist single point your threads, you'll be happy you did.

The quality of thread a die produces leaves a lot to be desired especially something as large as 14mm

That said I've been told I'm completely wrong about this and a die works just fine if you use the piloted starter,

My opinion is just because you'll settle for a fat ugly girl doesn't mean I will.

dies are for cleaning up existing threads not creating new threads.

I single point all my external threads......

AK.... MOSIN... no big difference. I would have thought you would just whack it with some 1/8" 6010 set at 200 amps and call it a day!

See it's not the Mosin I hate it's the owners. I've had way to many emails and calls from guys that think because the gun is cheep my price to "fix" it must be as well.

AK people don't seem to have this defect. well at least not the rank and file AK guys, I've had a few guys think my PSL barrels should cost $99 and be ready to ship in a day.

But it's not an AK, it's a Vepr so yeah I'll 6010 that muzzle brake on no problem.

No I take that back. The Mosin is just one crapy, ugly, unrefined, not even ruggedly elegant rifle. I've never liked them well there are to versions I have a guilty pleasure of admiration for.

858casper858 owns one and Xavier Owns the other. Take a mosin chop it down to 16" and mount a AMD brake on it. it clears out shooting ranges fast. lights cigars from four feet away but will leave you with no eyebrows either.

I do need to find a mosin so I can stick weld a tasco on it. Just out of spite
