    Rust

What is the best method to remove light rust from a blued weapon with out removing the bluing?

I could bead blast it, but I do not have the ability to re-blue it.

Medium grade Bronze Wool is what I use to start, followed by 4-0 Steel Wool if needed, gently and with plenty of oil for both. Re-oil or wax after clean-up.

An old nickel (5 cent piece), I did not believe it till I tried it. Lightly rub the edge of an old nickel on the rusty spot using some kind of oil. I am not sure when they changed the nickel content in a nickel but an older one from the 80's will work fine if you don't have bronze wool.

Bronze wool or 0000 steel wool as mentioned above.

Then get in the habit of every time you touch one of your weapons, before you put it back you wipe it down with a non airisole gun oil . The spray cans have too much carrier and not enough oil.
A big container of 3in1 works great

What type of oil should I use while rubbing it down with the wool?

And in all fairness, just because JMB did it doesn't mean anything. He'd have won WWII with a soup can, a fork, and a couple rocks. Seriously, even McGuyver and Steven Hawking get together every now and then and are like "How the **** did he do that?..."

Kroil would be best but in reality Liquid wrench, 3in1, Hoppes, anything with goo anti oxidant properties.

Kroil you would probably have to order unless you can find a weld supply, or Industrial tool supply. Someplace where Millwrights shop.

Outside of that good ol' Marvel Mystery oil would work.

Pretty much any oil will do. it's just that some are better then others.

There is a product made that makes taking rust off without affecting bluing really easy, and it is great for cleaning bores too.

                      Big 45 Frontier Metal cleaner.http://www.big45.com/

I have personally used it for both and it works. Use with oil for rust removal if bluing is fairly weak.

Here is a video of it being used to remove rust:

Yeah Kroil is pretty hard to find outside of gunshows, as is 0000 Bronze wool.

I order Kroil directly from their website and I found Bronze wool at a Boat Supply store down in Marina Pacifica. If your in Stockton this means nothing to you, sorry. Might try industrial paint supply shops. Hope this helps.

Thanks KC, I never thought about that but you're right. I guess I wanted to buy my wool local to avoid the shipping charges. Good idea!

For your bronze/steel wool lubricant, any light petroleum product will suffice. Turpentine would work well, as would kerosene, paint thinner, or even gasoline with some motor oil mixed in. Its primary purpose is to carry away all the swarf created by the rubbing process.
