    1911 hammer drop issue

    Hey Guys!

Having a little trouble with a 1911 build. When I have the MSH on and the grip safety on without the thumb safety to hold the grip safety the hammer will fire like it is supposed to. But for some reason when i put the thumb safety in half way to keep the grip safety there it will not fire. the trigger becomes stuck and not move. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more details please let me know. Im a super noob when it comes to 1911s

It sounds like your grip safety needs fitting. You need to check where the grip safety is making contact (the small tang on the inside) and make sure that it clears when the safety is pressed.

Yep sounds like a fitting issue.

Did you fit the thumb safety? I would think this as its when the thumb safety is put in that it binds and that screams not fitting the thumb safety.

I did not fit it. I am a little confused on how to do that exactly.

The horizontal surface in green on the safety on the left...file it up just enough to clear the trigger when the grip safety is pushed in.

Take look at the lower arrows in the last two pics Jericho posted. That is where the thumbs safety is contacting the trigger bar and likely where you need to fit. I had to remove a small amount from the bottom of the potrusion that the trigger bar is suppose to go under when the safety is depressed. Before I did that the trigger would get stuck and I need to pull it forward manually to reset it.

Never mind, look at what Ojisan posted, picture is worth 1000 words.

On the thumb safety you have to file a flat on the bottom corner, it should not even be able to be installed without that as it will hit things. Don't go crazy as you just want to file it till it fits in and works. Too much and its toast.

EDIT: to be more clear look at jericho89 top post with the three pics. The top pic in particular. You will see the inside of the thumb safety where it engages the sear. That bottom corner is what stops it from going int of he frame and where the flat needs to be filed to be operational.

If the grip safety works but its when you try to put in the thumb safety it won't go in and doesn't work, well that's the thumb safety.

Thanks I will try to trouble shoot more when i get home. I have not even put the thumb saftey all the way in yet i just put it in enough to keep the grip safety connected and it will not work then. I will try all this stuff over the next few days and report back. Thanks again to everyone for helping me out.

^Post #2, the quarter circle part that arrow #1 points to is the nub of the thumb safety that needs to be fitted.
Top / radius: remove a teensy-tiny little bit at a time (if /as needed) to allow it to move.
Lower edge: around 5 o'clock position may need to be taken down just a little, too.

ok, totally makes sense now. I was a little overwhelmed at first and was just going to call it quits. (not the first time during this project) but you guys really cleared it up for me.

A file is the safest bet.
If you don't understand what's involved with fitting, go check out the Kuhnhausen book.
