I first thought that myself, but if you consider that many places charge $200 for the upper, and $190-$200 is not uncommon for an LR-308 80% lower, and figure $120~ for a jig. Pretty darn close to that price.

I used an Aero Precision upper which was $155, and it is possible to get an 80% lower for less, say $100, but you'll still need to pay at least $100 for a jig. That's pushing over $450, so not that much cheaper, and I just had to fix some flaws on my Aero Precision M5 upper that I personally would consider to be a blem, but wasn't sold as such. The feed ramps where the aluminum mates to the barrel feed ramps were not 100% concentric and it was causing some feeding issues where a case shoulder would occasionally grab and cause a jam, leaving a crease in the shoulder of the case. I would hope that a company providing the upper and lower wouldn't exhibit this type of issue, although this had nothing to do with the real issue of improper alignment with the feed ramps on the barrel. I didn't consider it to be good machining in general, sad to say about Aero Precision.

Funny, I originally started out to build a 308 pistol also, and I did mill it as a pistol lower. I was considering the CMMG 12.5" upper also...but in the end I decided that by adding a barrel that was a couple inches longer, I would use a real stock rather than the crappy Sig Brace. There is always a chance that a LEO won't understand the law completly and take away your 308 pistol for being an SBR.

I have also quit taking my 5.56 pistol to the range, and use a 5.56 configured as a rifle also. I keep the 5.56 pistol at home for HD, where it makes sense with a red dot. 308 is way too big for HD.

That said, I think it would be fun to shoot a 308 pistol, just that I was getting a sermon every month by my RO on range day with my 5.56, a sermon on NFA, SBRs, LEOs, etc...maybe it made me paranoid, but as I said, we're only talking about a couple inches and I have an extendable stock on my 308 which is way more comfortable than the Sig Brace.

I hear you brother on the comfort of the sig brace. The reason i built is simply because i could i already have a 16in LWRC REPR and wanted more of a compact, hard hitting trunk gun. Since i cant SBR a SCAR in CA i thought this would be the way to go. The .308 round maintains great ballistics with such a short barrel and doesnt suffer nearly the drop off in performance that the 5.56 suffers from a short barrel. Its a blast to shoot and doesnt recoil bad at all with sig brace. Its a novelty, range toy, and conversation piece. I highly recommend one

I definitely see the reason for doing it, and think it would be a fun gun to shoot, as I mentioned, but when I was looking at getting a 12.5" barrel and putting a KX3 can on it, it would have put me just 1/4" shy of being able to have a stock on it...so that kinda swayed me. What is 1/4" when you think about it like that?

I guess it depends on how hard hitting of a trunk gun one needs. I have a 10.5" 5.56, and I do have a Sig Brace, but use a Thordsen saddle/cover on a KAK tube. It feels good to shoot, but there is a fine line between shouldering and using a cheek weld....that is my HD rifle, and I think it's more accurate than a pistol.

There's a couple 10.5" 308 barrels out nowadays and that might be a decent option to get a shorter firearm, but the size difference is minimal is one considers going 14.5" with a 1.5" brake. Then you can have an adjustable stock. With my 5.56 pistol, the novelty wore off for me and I now have a 24" Krieger barrel on the 5.56 I take to the range. It is such a nicer upper than my 10.5" pistol, it's like night and day...way less recoil, much quieter (doesn't have any brake), way more accurate. It's funner to shoot for me. Variety is the spice of life though...

I hear what you are saying. I plan on adding a pws fsc30 to the muzzle to smooth out the gun. It will be 1 loud ***** but it is not meant as an inside the house home defense gun. I wanted something in .308 that was as short and light as possible because i wanted to run my Elcan SU-230A HD on top(hefty) without comprimising the ballistics of the .308 cartridge. I must say that it swings very nicely and the sig brace actually provides very good balance to the gun. I have used kak tube spacers to acheive the balance, eye releif and cheek weld that i want and honestly an adjustable stock is not needed for me. Honestly i would love to take this gun pig hunting. I feel it would excel and be very forgiving while humping it around on a sling or in hand. As far as liking options.... Ive got a few

Well, with that many you certainly can afford to have a 308 pistol.

I really don't need that many. A couple 5.56s and a couple 308s is pretty much all i need for ARs. I want to make a bolt action.
