I just bought a Maverick 88 8-shot for HD. But I would also like to add choke tubes to it to make it usable for some clay birds, and possibly for the feathered variety(yes, I know I'll need to plug the mag). What I would like to know is if this can cause problems with the strength of the barrel? Also, how much should this service cost @. There is a guy offering the service for $60, which seems very fair and he has good feedback. But I think I would rather get it done locally. TIA

Modifying a Cyl bore for choke tubes.

the service is right around $100-$150
choke style is determined by the barrel wall thickeness, Older shotgun have thinner barrels and require thin wall chokes or simply can not be choked at all.
$60 seem like a bargain and little to good to be true, I'd want to know how long he's been doing this? What he uses to determine minimum barrel thickness? and what tooling is he using to install the chokes?
If you ask and can't get a straight answer walk away. -
Why not just buy an extra barrel fitted with the choke(s) you want?
As for the $60 price, I'm with KC. Run. Something is being left out of the equation.Comment

Because it's an 8-shot. So I would either have to swap the mag to a 5 shot, and buy a barrel for it. Or try and find the 28" 8-shot barrel from Mosssberg which hasn't been available in at least a year, and I can't find one anywhere. Would still cost more than modding the 20" barrel also.Comment

Briley wants about $150 for labor only to thread, no chokes. I would use that as a pricing guide.
$60 seems a might thin, but if it is done OK you win. If not, you are out the price of a replacement barrel. Maverick barrels are easier to replace than Ithaca 4-E'S, go for it and post here how it turns out.Last edited by kendog4570; 06-11-2015, 7:30 AM.Comment

Here is the ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261851511805...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
The guy has PERFECT feedback. On his work as well as his sales. Seems legit.Comment

I see he is in The Volunteer State. Be sure and send Confederate money with your barrel!

I had Briley shorten the barrel and install their tubes in my Ithaca 51. They did a real nice job, and turnaround was fairly quick.sigpic

You realize you can buy a new barrel set up for five shot and move the lug.??
Barrel is going to require refinishing or you can get a new lug and mount it with out to much trouble. Then cut the old lug off. Less refinish work the way
BTW I don't care what his feedback rating is, you are buying a service that could ruin your weapon and possibly get you killed I personally would not trust a cheep price to be anywhere near good without a lot more in terms of references.Last edited by kcstott; 06-11-2015, 12:59 PM.Comment
