    Use any of the 4140 series but go with a hard chrome bore.

      I'm jealous of the gun, trying to find one right now but they're hens teeth.

      From what I've heard, nitride (done well) is better than hard chrome in pretty much every way. It's extremely corrosion resistant - I shot a few hundred rounds of 7N6 through my Ballistic Advantage barrel on an AR and then let it sit for a week, after which there were no signs of corrosion.

      I'm seeing more 4150 around now, which should last a tiny bit longer, but in the case of a nitrided barrel it isn't too important.

      4140CM sounds like a redundant phrase - 41xx are all chromoly. As far as I can tell the R means it's high sulfur content which makes machining easier. That might let the rifling be a little better cut and therefore a hair more accurate but I doubt it matters on a gun like that.

      Additionally, when they say carbon steel with nitride they mean chromoly with nitride - 4140 is by definition chromoly, and mild steel barrels aren't very common as far as I can tell. What they mean is non-stainless.

      I'd like to hear what it costs and how well it shoots.

        Hard chrome in the bore provides more protection then just about anything especially when using corrosive ammo. It is why the military likes it so much on their rifles. There is a company called TechPlate in Orange County that is one of the top companies around when it come to firearms coatings, ask them.

          There are only two typical materials used in high pressure barrels. 4140 & 416 stainless. That's it, material type doesn't make a barrel more or less accurate.

          As for barrel treatments, chrome lining is about the best you can do for corrosion protection but it's also the worst you can do to accuracy.

          If it were me I'd get a Shilen barrel and if I really had a hair up my butt I'd get it nitrided.

            As for nitriding be more corrosion resistant I would disagree. A nitrided surface will still rust. Even melonite will rust.

            The thing is if you are taking care of your weapon corrosion is not an issue.

                The best twist rate is based largely on the bullet weight within a specific caliber or bullet diameter. So to tell you what twist is 'Best' would require you to specific what bullet you are going to use.

                  Well you are not looking for .30 cal, you need to be looking for .303 and they have a 7.65mm barrel with a 1:10 twist and if you think .5" of twist will create a problem you need to go buy a $600 Romaininan barrel

                    Nitride melonite, and QPQ are essentially synonymous, right?

                    I have a 5.45 AR with a Ballistic Advantage barrel, 4150CMV, QPQ. I put a few hundred rounds of 7N6 through it and then let it sit for a week. No signs of corrosion. It's tough stuff.

                      For processing a single barrel like you are looking to do, Melonite or any of the similar nitriding processes will be far cheaper than having someone hard chrome a single barrel due to the chrome process needing to have the barrel etched to make room for chrome.

                        barrel length and twist rate are completely irrelevant to each other for the most part in any Rifle length barrel.

                        if your barrel is 16" or longer stick with the standard twist rate that is for your bullet length not weight. I can't say on the 7.62X54R but being that it's ballistics are near the .308 and bullet weights are near the same (length should be checked) a 1:10 twist would work just fine.

                        Just be sure when you order a barrel for a .311" bullet you are getting a .311" bore
                        there was a guy ior maybe still is a guy selling barrels for PSL's and he has used a .308 blank, That is not a good idea.

                          Your best accuracy comes with the slowest twist that will properly stabilize your bullet of choice at the length you cut the barrel and in the weather conditions you shoot in.
                          So, for an 18" barrel, 11" twist is about perfect for the 180's while a 13" would be about perfect for the 147's.

                            The twist rate effects what bullets you can shoot which directly effects how far you can shoot accurately.

                            Using 223 as an example, a 16" 1:9 twist barrel will generally not stabilize 75-77gr bullets while a 20" 1:9 barrel usually will stabilize 75-77gr bullets.
                            Moving from 68-69gr to 75-77gr bullets is a significant advantage beyond 400yds.

                              Thats where you leave me in the dust, I wouldn't expect a 1-9 to stabilize anything heavier then a 67 grain
                              I'd bump to a 1-7 for 70 grain and up.
