I hope this is the right section to post this.

I'm looking for recommendations on a good bench for when I work on guns. It needs to go in my house and I'm looking for something about 4 or 5 feet long and very sturdy so I can mount a vice. I prefer wood top. Anyone care to suggest a bench or tell me what they use? I have found a lot of benches but they are either high priced or way too cheaply made. I'd prefer to spend around 400 or less on one. Any help or recommendations at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have this at home as my reloading bench. I reinforced the area where my reloading press is by stacking a couple of 3/4" plywood.

Plus, I have a few 30mm ammo cans full of various brass, powders, bullets, etc to help weight down the bench.

The holes for the pegs I just filled in with wood putty and sanded flush.

Find an industrial salvage yard and find a lyon or dayton work bench. Usually $50-$100 total

Or you could weld one up.

A good work bench ain't cheep and I held out till I found the one i wanted for what I wanted to pay.

Go to craigslist. Search workbench.
Also a good metal desk would work good.

I can build you a bench. $400 I think I can do better then that Paint it any color you like adjustable feet to level it. All welded 2" square tube.

How thick a top do you want??

Bought one of these off Amazon, wood from Home Depot and Counter Top from AS IS section in IKEA. Spent about $170. Pic isn't mine but mine is setup pretty much similar.

I'm very interested in this. I'd want it pretty thick because ideally I want to be able to mount a vice and be able to do heavy work. Example of heavy work is beating out AR15 front sight pins (A2 Sight tower) or barrel nuts. I need to be able to hammer hard and pry without breaking it or it moving too much. I of course wouldn't hammer direct on the wood but the wood needs to be thick enough to support whatever I'm using to hammer on.

I've got a 3/4" chuck of maple ply wood that I have on my bench. It's very tough, like you said as long as you don't beat directly on the wood.

Like I said I'll get pricing on the tubing and ply wood. I'll let you know.

I use this^

Use it for everything from cleaning guns, gunsmithing tasks, to reloading and other home jobs. Have a wilton vise, reloading press, all my components, and I build it to the size I wanted. Couldn't be happier.

Any plywood would work, but cut a piece of press board, contact cement it to plywood surface shiny side up. Easily replaced when it get damaged/dirty.

Make friends with an elevator guy....elevator doors make one hell of a sturdy stainless steel bench. They sometimes have to pull out old doors.

Simpson strong-ties, plywood, lumber and screws.
you can buy a kit or just buy the parts. also you can scale it up to use 4x4 rather than 2x4.
