    Parkerizing?

Does anyone have recommendations for home parkerizing? Looking at parkerizing my VZ58 receiver before I build it.

I used Brownells solution. It's really stupid easy, I did mine on the gas grill.

Toughest part was seasoning the solution enough to get it really reactive. One I got there, and it took two prior FALs to do it, I got really nice results. The third one looks prosit ally done.

They make stainless mud trays for drywall, a barrel would fit in one, other guys used three inch PVC and poured hot solution in, dropped in the barrel.

It's really forgiving. Worst problem will be flash rusting afterwards. You just re blast and do it again, takes five minutes to be trying a second time.

For the love of God, don't try this at home! You can create hazardous gases! They explode! You can burn yourself! You can get acid burns! (now that we are done with the usual asshat warnings)

Parkerizing was invented by Parker in his kitchen using his wife's canning pots...

Use a pan/pot/tank that is non-reactive to acid and can withstand high temps. (250 degrees is safe)

You can buy different solutions from many outlets, your mileage may vary, or you can make your own acids at home from store-bought ingredients.

Most important is be cautious and be prepared for the pitfalls. Aside from those usual cautions, it is fun!

I use the brownells manganese phosphate setup in tanks I built on a cart with a propane tank and burners all built into the cart.

I do the standard gray parkerizing as well as my brown variation:
