    Another AR 80% question

How loud is it if I was to mill out a 80% with a router? I'm thinking of building some more 80% but my living situation has changed. I live in an 8 unit building and work nights so most people aren't home at noon. Plenty of previous experience, but never done this method.

The router isn't loud by itself, but it will get high pitched while you mill. It shouldn't be a problem if your neighbors are out in the afternoon. I can see it being more of a problem in the evenings.

The drill press may vibrate your floor and be more annoying than the noise.

It also depends on the router as well. The rigid one is fairly quiet and has worked well for me. Another consideration is a small shop vac to run at the same time to suck the chips as your going. If noise is that much of an issue you may just have to clean longer. Just a thought though.

        drill press is pretty quiet
but there will be a ton of chips either way
and add cutting oil it will be a sticky mess

I tried using a shop vac when doing myself and it was hard just had to stop and suck everything out and turn press back on

you doing this in a garage or inside the house
because you should consider putting down something they get everywhere

Op just watch a YouTube video.
It's loud enough you should wear hearing protection. Unless you don't care about the ears then you're cherry

Alright, that's all very helpful. Who makes a quiter affordable router so I can minimize noise? Also this would be done inside. I have a very heavy wood table that's about 3 inches thick and I have no sentimental value stretched to it. It's pretty sturdy, but I don't even have a vice mounted on the table yet...

When I say table I don't mean dining room table.

you prob wont get responses. Just searching. Many other threads already with the same questions. You're crazy doing that inside. Alumn will go everywhere. get the vacuum attachment and best of luck. Again try the search feature. You will be surprised the answers are already there waiting.

Just got done doing 2 in my garage.
I wouldn't worry about the noise.
But just imagine small aluminum chips EVERYWHERE!
                  And I mean everywhere.
I guess it might not be a problem as long as you never go bare foot in your apartment ever again.
Seriously, find a friend who will let you use their garage.

maybe get one of those harbor fright blast cabinets to work in

also a router will be quicker than a drill press and annoying squeel for an hour is better than a constant whine for 3 hours

Pretty much quieter than having monkey sex with the windows open....

Seriously don't worry about the noise. But be aware of the mess the chips will make.

Do you have a back porch or parking area? I would do it there.

wear ear plugs. It will produce a noticeable deafening affect without them. its your hearing...maintain it while you have it.

Alright, I'll have to think about this. Also I've been searching for a cheap garage rental space to do this at but I'm having a hard time finding one.

I've done a bunch in the spare room of my house while my kids watch TV and stuff in the living room. I just set up some saw horses, a piece of ply for a table top, a tarp on the floor and use a vacuum. It's not quiet and on top of it some ear muffs are a good idea. The vacuum is key or there will be a mess. With a tarp the chips that do escape I vacuum up. Pretty damn clean. The vacuum will make almost as much noise as the router. Just ask your adjacent neighbors when they will be gone tell them your doing a little home machining and want to do it when their gone. Nice guys will win here.

Any of the recommended routers are quiet when on... It's when ur milling away at the lower is when it gets loud. And if u have a shop vac on as well!? Your neighbors will definitely hear!
