Block a Star 13-rd. Hi Cap Mag to Hold 10 -- Will It Work?

I had a gun transfer stopped today because the piece, a Star Firestar Plus, had no magazine. Efforts to find a California-compliant 10-rd. mag have been fruitless so far. A respected gunsmith said the 13-rd. mag that came with the gun could not be permanently pinned. He cited technical reasons. I could not argue with him.

Well, the buyer likes the gun. He contacted a smith he has done business with, and trusts, who says it can be done. The problem is: what if the second smith is wrong? I could end up with no magazine that works and a gun I can neither sell nor shoot.

So, can the magazine be successfully pinned to meet state requirements regarding capacity?

Glad to hear it. Do you have any recommendations as to a good gunsmith in Orange County, or thereabouts, who could do it for less than a million?

You might first try asking in the FFL forum. As far as I understand the law, the serialized frame is the firearm, and a magazine is not required for transfer (especially, for example, AR lowers). It does make the safe handling demo more challenging, and there have been discussions in the FFL forum about the impact of the demo on long gun sales. But it's still legal to transfer without a magazine.

          Almost anything can be pinned.

Worst case, if you dropped a piece of chopstick in it and welded the base plate shut, it would IMO be quite permanent (and irreversible without destruction).
